Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg at Avangard Omsk

BALASHIKHA, Russia (Interstat) — In a stunning Kontinental Hockey League upset, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg erased a three-goal deficit to defeat the league-leading Avangard Omsk 4-1 on Monday night at Balashikha Arena.

The victory, fueled by a relentless third-period push, handed Avangard just its third regulation loss of the season and showcased Avtomobilist’s resilience on the road.

The game began disastrously for the visitors. Just over three minutes into the first period, Avtomobilist’s Stepan Khripunov was sent off for hooking. On the ensuing power play, Avangard’s Nikolai Prokhorkin capitalized, netting his sixth goal of the season with assists from Andrew Poturalski and Konstantin Okulov.

Avtomobilist managed to get on the board later in the period when Khripunov atoned for his earlier penalty by scoring at the 13:30 mark, assisted by Danil Romantsev and Nikita Shashkov.

Any momentum was quickly stifled as Avangard dominated the second period. Roman Gorbunov extended the home team’s lead midway through the frame, making it 2-1 with an assist from Alexei Byvaltsev. The pressure continued, and with just 59 seconds remaining in the period, Alexander Sharov found the net for Avangard, assisted by Jesse Blacker and Reid Boucher, pushing their lead to 3-1.

Facing a two-goal deficit heading into the final period, Avtomobilist’s comeback was ignited by a string of Avangard penalties. The visitors finally broke through on the power play with just 1:22 left in regulation. Reid Boucher scored his fourth goal of the season, with Roman Gorbunov providing the primary assist, to tie the game and force overtime.

After a scoreless extra frame, the game proceeded to a shootout where Avtomobilist completed the improbable rally, securing the extra point and the victory.

Avangard goaltender Nikita Serebryakov was a central figure in the game, making 24 saves on 27 shots faced in a losing effort. His defensemen were active offensively, with Damir Sharipzyanov leading the team with four shots on goal. Artyom Blazhiyevsky and Sharipzyanov each took minor penalties for the home side.

The loss drops Avangard’s record to 9-3-0, though they remain atop the KHL standings. Avtomobilist improved to 8-5-0 with the win, solidifying their position in the playoff picture.

The outcome defied pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 5-2 Avangard victory and gave the Omsk-based club a 64.9 percent probability of winning.

The two teams are set for a quick rematch, highlighting a challenging upcoming schedule for both clubs. Avtomobilist returns home to face SKA Saint Petersburg on Wednesday before hosting this same Avangard team on Friday. Avangard’s road trip continues with a visit to Metallurg Magnitogorsk on Sunday. The clubs will meet again in Omsk on Oct. 19.
