Avangard Omsk at Spartak Moscow
MOSCOW (Interstat) — Nikolai Prokhorkin scored twice and Konstantin Okulov added a goal and two assists as Avangard Omsk delivered a decisive 4-1 road victory over Spartak Moscow in Kontinental Hockey League action Monday afternoon at Luzhniki Minor Arena.
The win, powered by a dominant three-goal second period, improved Avangard’s record across all competitions to 41 wins and 19 losses, solidifying its position near the top of the league standings. Spartak, struggling for consistency, fell to 32 wins and 29 losses.
Avangard goaltender Nikita Serebryakov was sturdy in net, turning aside 17 of 18 shots to secure the win. His performance was crucial as the visitors weathered early penalty trouble.
Spartak had early opportunities with back-to-back power plays in the first period after minors to Avangard’s Nail Yakupov and Damir Sharipzyanov for tripping. However, the home side failed to capitalize. Avangard struck first at even strength late in the opening frame when Okulov netted his 21st goal of the season at the 15:17 mark.
The game turned decisively in Avangard’s favor during a blistering middle period. Prokhorkin began his two-goal afternoon at 24:11, finishing a play with assists from Okulov and defenseman Artyom Blazhiyevsky. Just over six minutes later, Prokhorkin struck again, this time on a setup from Okulov and Yakupov, for his 17th goal of the campaign.
Before the period ended, Ivan Igumnov extended the lead to 4-0 with his fifth goal, assisted by Semyon Chistyakov. The three-goal outburst in under 15 minutes overwhelmed the Spartak defense and silenced the home crowd.
Spartak’s lone response came late in the third period. With the game already decided, Daniil Gutik scored his 20th goal at 56:59, assisted by German Rubtsov and Dmitry Vishnevsky, to spoil Serebryakov’s shutout bid.
The game concluded with a flurry of coincidental roughing and interference penalties to Spartak’s Artemy Knyazev and Avangard’s Giovanni Fiore with just over three minutes remaining.
The victory continued Avangard’s recent strong form and avenged a higher-scoring 7-5 loss to Spartak in their previous meeting on Dec. 7. The outcome closely mirrored the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 4-3 Avangard win. Their ELO system had given Avangard a 59 percent probability of victory.
Avangard continues its road swing with a visit to CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. Spartak looks to rebound on the road against Lada Togliatti next Saturday.
