Amur Khabarovsk at Metallurg Magnitogorsk
MAGNITOGORSK, Russia (Interstat) — The Metallurg Magnitogorsk defense, led by a goal and an assist from Yegor Yakovlev and a decisive third-period tally from Artyom Minulin, powered the Kontinental Hockey League leaders to a 3-1 victory over Amur Khabarovsk on Friday night at Arena Metallurg.
The win improved Metallurg’s formidable record to 43-13-1, solidifying its position atop the league standings. Amur, fighting for playoff positioning, fell to 20-37-1 with the road loss. The outcome aligned with statistical projections, though the final score was tighter than the Interstat game simulator’s forecast of a 6-1 Metallurg victory. The system had given the home team an 84.40% probability to win.
Metallurg set the tone early, capitalizing on a quick power-play chance. Just 44 seconds after Amur’s Ivan Vorobyov was sent off for roughing, Yakovlev opened the scoring at the 2:16 mark of the first period. He converted passes from Vladimir Tkachyov and Dmitry Silantyev to beat Amur goaltender Maxim Dorozhko.
Amur responded with resilience, tying the game less than three minutes later. Oleg Li netted his 12th goal of the season at 4:54, assisted by Yaroslav Likhachyov, to silence the home crowd and briefly swing momentum.
The deadlock was short-lived. Metallurg reclaimed the lead for good at 6:38 of the first when Sergei Tolchinsky, the Moscow-born forward, scored his 13th, with defensemen Robin Press and Alexei Maklyukov earning the assists.
The game settled into a defensive struggle from there, with both goaltenders holding firm. Ilya Nabokov, securing the win in net for Metallurg, stopped 22 of 23 shots. His counterpart, Dorozhko, was equally sharp for long stretches, making 22 saves on 25 shots to keep Amur within reach.
The insurance goal came late in the second period, just four seconds before the intermission. Minulin, who finished with a game-high three shots on goal and three hits, fired home his fourth of the season at 19:56. The play was set up by Roman Kantserov and Yakovlev, who capped a strong two-point night.
A relatively clean third period saw only one penalty, and Amur could not solve Nabokov again. Metallurg’s defensive corps, featuring key performances from Minulin, Yakovlev, Maklyukov and Press, effectively closed out the game, limiting Amur’s chances.
The victory continued Metallurg’s dominance in the season series, having now defeated Amur in three consecutive meetings, including a 4-2 win on Jan. 24 and a 4-3 victory on Jan. 19. For Amur, the loss halted a modest two-game winning streak that included an overtime victory against Sibir Novosibirsk on Wednesday.
Metallurg looks to continue its winning ways at home on Sunday against Admiral Vladivostok. Amur continues a difficult road trip, heading to Omsk to face Avangard on Sunday.
