Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod at Dynamo Moscow

MOSCOW (Interstat) — Maxim Letunov scored 8:18 into overtime to complete a dramatic third-period comeback, lifting Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod to a 4-3 victory over Dynamo Moscow in a Kontinental Hockey League game Monday afternoon at VTB Ice Palace.

The visiting Torpedo, which had lost 4-0 to Dynamo in their previous meeting on Dec. 1, erased a two-goal deficit in the final seven minutes of regulation before securing the extra-time win. The victory improved Torpedo’s record across all competitions to 24 wins and 19 losses, while Dynamo fell to 25-18.

Dynamo defenseman Daniil Pylenkov was the standout performer in a losing effort, scoring twice on a game-high eight shots. His second goal, a power-play marker at 5:42 of the third period, gave Dynamo a 2-1 lead. Pavel Kudryavtsev extended the advantage to 3-1 just 24 seconds later, capitalizing on a feed from Ansel Galimov to seemingly put the home side in control.

Torpedo goaltender Denis Kostin, who made 32 saves, kept his team within reach. The comeback began at 13:44 of the third when Yegor Sokolov netted his ninth goal of the season. With Kostin pulled for an extra attacker, Yegor Vinogradov tied the game with just 37 seconds remaining in regulation, scoring his 13th goal with assists from Sokolov and Bogdan Konyushkov.

In overtime, Letunov took a pass from Amir Garayev and Daniil Zhuravlyov before beating Dynamo goaltender Ilya Konovalov for the winner. Letunov finished with a goal and an assist, while Zhuravlyov and Sokolov each had a goal and an assist for Torpedo.

The game began with Torpedo striking first. Zhuravlyov opened the scoring at 13:47 of the first period, firing a shot from the point for his second goal of the season, with assists from Sergei Goncharuk and Letunov.

Dynamo responded in the second period. During a 4-on-4 situation after coincidental roughing penalties to Kirill Adamchuk and Sergei Boikov, Pylenkov netted his first of the afternoon at 4:20, tying the game with a shot assisted by Artyom Sergeyev and Yegor Rimashevsky.

The result defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 5-2 Dynamo victory, and its ELO rating system gave Dynamo a 66.5% probability to win.

The game was a penalty-filled affair. Dynamo’s Semyon Der-Arguchintsev was called for hooking in the second period, and Torpedo’s Vladislav Firstov took a hooking penalty in the third.

Torpedo, which lost 7-6 at Severstal Cherepovets on Saturday, will look to build on the overtime win when it hosts Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on Wednesday. Dynamo, which had shut out HC Sochi 3-0 last Wednesday, will turn around to host Spartak Moscow, also on Wednesday.
