Barys Astana at Sibir Novosibirsk

NOVOSIBIRSK, Russia (Interstat) — The Sibir Novosibirsk offense erupted for three goals in a 97-second span of the first period and never looked back, cruising to a 4-1 victory over Barys Astana in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup Monday at Ice Sports Palace Sibir.

The win, powered by a 25-save performance from goaltender Anton Krasotkin and multi-point nights from several forwards, improved Sibir’s record to 10-22. Barys, which managed only a second-period goal from Max Willman, fell to 11-21.

Sibir seized control of the game midway through a disjointed opening frame littered with penalties. After killing off an early tripping minor to Mikhail Abramov, Sibir found itself on a four-on-four following coincidental roughing and boarding calls. Anton Kosolapov capitalized on the open ice at 14:40, firing a shot past the Barys netminder off assists from Chase Priskie and Scott Wilson to tie the game.

The floodgates opened immediately after. Just 41 seconds later, at 15:21, Arkhip Nekolenko gave Sibir the lead for good, converting a feed from Semyon Koshelev, with Priskie earning his second helper of the sequence. Abramov then redeemed his earlier penalty by finishing a play in front of the net at 17:30, with Wilson notching his second assist, to make it 3-0 before the first intermission.

Barys showed a brief sign of life in the second period when Willman scored his fourth of the season at 19:40, cutting the deficit to two. The visitors could not build on the momentum, however, as the Sibir defense tightened and Krasotkin turned aside all 10 shots he faced in the third period.

Sibir’s Ivan Chekhovich sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 58:14 of the third, assisted again by Koshelev, to provide the final margin.

The game’s outcome aligned with pregame projections from Interstat, whose simulator had predicted a 2-1 Sibir win and whose ELO system gave the Novosibirsk club a 62.4% probability of victory.

The contest continued a season-long trend of struggles for both clubs, who sit near the bottom of the KHL standings. For Sibir, the win snapped a two-game skid following a loss to Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg on Saturday. Barys has now lost three consecutive games, having been outscored 12-7 in that span.

The two teams will complete their home-and-home series in Astana on Sunday, Dec. 7. Barys will first host Spartak Moscow on Friday, while Sibir returns to action Wednesday at home against the same Spartak side.

In their previous three meetings this season, the series had been tightly contested. Sibir won a shootout in Astana on Oct. 14, and another in Novosibirsk on Oct. 5, while Barys took a 6-4 decision in the season opener for both clubs on Sept. 27. Monday’s regulation decision was the most decisive result in the season series to date.

Key performers for Sibir included Nekolenko with a goal, Koshelev with two assists, and the defensive pairing of Priskie (two assists) and Wilson (two assists), who were instrumental in the first-period outburst. For Barys, defenseman Ian McCoshen logged three hits and four penalty minutes in a physical effort.
