Red Star Kunlun at Ak Bars Kazan
KAZAN, Russia (Interstat) — Nikita Dynyak scored the game-winning goal with six seconds remaining in regulation, capping a four-goal comeback for Ak Bars Kazan in a 4-1 victory over the Shanghai Dragons in a Kontinental Hockey League game Sunday at TatNeft Arena.
The Dragons, who entered the game with a 14-15 record across all competitions, appeared poised for an upset after holding the potent Ak Bars offense at bay for over 52 minutes. Goaltender Timur Bilyalov was the cornerstone of the comeback, making 35 saves on 36 shots to secure the win for the home team.
The game was a penalty-filled affair from the start. Ak Bars was assessed a bench minor for too many players on the ice just 1:57 into the first period, setting the tone for a disjointed opening frame that featured six combined penalties.
Despite the early power play opportunity and controlling significant stretches of play, Shanghai could not solve Bilyalov. The momentum shifted at 11:41 of the first period when Ak Bars forward Dmitry Katelevsky netted his third goal of the season, assisted by Dynyak and Stepan Falkovsky, to tie the game.
Ak Bars broke the deadlock late in the second period. At the 28:02 mark, Artur Brovkin scored his first goal of the campaign, with assists from Nikita Lyamkin and Dynyak, giving the home team a 2-1 lead.
The third period saw Shanghai pressing for an equalizer, but Ak Bars put the game out of reach with just 7:34 remaining. Ilya Safonov notched his 10th goal of the season, with helpers from Artyom Galimov and Alexander Chmelevski, to extend the lead to 3-1.
Shanghai finally broke through with 56 seconds left on the clock. Troy Josephs scored his second goal of the season, with Adam Clendening and Yegor Chezganov earning the assists, to make it a one-goal game and set up a frantic finish.
Any hope of a Shanghai comeback was extinguished six seconds later when Dynyak sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, his third of the season, for the 4-1 final.
Dynyak finished with a goal and two assists in a dominant performance. Katelevsky added a goal and three hits for Ak Bars, which improved its season record to 21-12.
Josephs provided the lone offense for the Dragons, who fell to 14-16. Defenseman Alexander Bryntsev was penalized for interference late in the third period.
The victory completed a two-game regular-season sweep for Ak Bars over Shanghai, having also defeated the Dragons 3-2 in a shootout on Nov. 23.
The loss extends a difficult stretch for Shanghai, which has lost three of its last four games. The Dragons will look to rebound at home against Salavat Yulaev Ufa on Wednesday.
Ak Bars, winners of two straight, will host Traktor Chelyabinsk on Wednesday. The result aligned with projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 3-1 Ak Bars victory and gave the Kazan club a 75.80 percent probability to win.
