Red Star Kunlun at Traktor Chelyabinsk
CHELYABINSK, Russia (Interstat) — In a stunning and lopsided Kontinental Hockey League contest, Traktor Chelyabinsk delivered a commanding 9-0 victory over the Shanghai Dragons on Wednesday night at Traktor Sport Palace.
The game, a complete reversal of the teams’ previous meeting on Oct. 4 which Shanghai won 5-4 in overtime, was dominated from start to finish by the home side. Traktor’s offensive outburst was complemented by a perfect 27-save shutout from goaltender Savely Sherstnev, who neutralized every Shanghai opportunity.
Andrei Svetlakov was the engine of Traktor’s offense, leading all players with a four-point night on two goals and two assists. His linemate, Joshua Leivo, also had a dominant performance, contributing a goal and two assists while directing a game-high seven shots on net.
The rout began early. Alexander Kadeikin opened the scoring for Traktor at the 7:40 mark of the first period, converting a feed from Yegor Korshkov. The lead doubled just over six minutes later when defenseman Grigory Dronov found the back of the net, with Svetlakov earning the primary assist.
A tripping penalty to Shanghai’s Kevin LaBanc late in the period gave Traktor a power play, which they converted in just 26 seconds. Leivo capitalized on the man-advantage, with assists from Vitaly Kravtsov and Mikhail Grigorenko, to make it 3-0 heading into the first intermission.
The second period saw no let-up from Traktor. Jordan Gross, another defenseman joining the attack, scored at the 1:47 mark. The goals continued in quick succession, with Andrei Nikonov and Yegor Korshkov scoring just over a minute apart midway through the frame to extend the lead to 6-0. Kravtsov added another power-play goal late in the period, again assisted by Svetlakov.
The third period featured more of the same, though it was marred by a series of penalties against Shanghai, including a five-minute slashing major to Spencer Foo and a subsequent double-minor for cross-checking and abuse of officials, signaling the Dragons’ mounting frustration. Svetlakov bookended the scoring for Traktor, netting his second goal of the game early in the period to seal the 9-0 final.
The victory was a record-setting offensive display for Traktor and a defensive catastrophe for Shanghai. The loss levels the Shanghai Dragons’ record across all competitions at 14-14, while Traktor Chelyabinsk improves to 14-16. The result defied the pre-game projection from Interstat, which had forecast a much closer 3-2 Traktor victory and gave the home team a 71.9 percent probability of winning.
Shanghai will look to rebound quickly as they continue their road trip against Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk on Friday. Traktor, meanwhile, will aim to carry the momentum from this decisive win into their next home game against HC Sochi, also on Friday.
