Metallurg Magnitogorsk at Barys Astana

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (Interstat) — Metallurg Magnitogorsk continued its dominant run through the Kontinental Hockey League season with a decisive 4-1 victory over Barys on Sunday at Barys Arena.

The win, fueled by a two-goal performance from Sergei Tolchinsky and a stout 31-save effort from goaltender Alexander S. Smolin, improved Metallurg’s record to 19-6 across all competitions. Barys, struggling to find consistency, fell to 8-17.

Metallurg set the tone early, capitalizing on a Barys penalty to open the scoring. Just seconds after a high-sticking call against Barys’ Max Willman, Daniil Vovchenko netted his seventh goal of the season at the 11:18 mark of the first period. Derek Barach and Dmitry Silantyev assisted on the play that gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.

The second period belonged to Tolchinsky. The Moscow native doubled Metallurg’s advantage at 12:38, finishing a setup from Yegor Yakovlev and Vovchenko. Just 54 seconds later, Tolchinsky struck again, this time on a play orchestrated by Vladimir E. Tkachyov, to extend the lead to 3-0. The two goals gave Tolchinsky three on the season.

Barys managed to break through early in the third period. Alikhan Asetov scored his first goal of the campaign at the 1:42 mark, with assists from Samat Daniyar and Alikhan Omirbekov, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and briefly energizing the home crowd.

Any momentum for Barys was short-lived, however, as Metallurg sealed the game with a late power-play goal. After a hooking penalty to Barys’ Jake Massie, Roman Kantserov scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season with 7:30 remaining in regulation. Tkachyov recorded his second assist of the night on the play, with Alexander Siryatsky adding a helper.

Smolin was a wall in net for Metallurg, turning aside 31 of 32 shots to secure the win. The victory was a model of efficiency for Metallurg, which has now won three consecutive games and 10 of its last 12.

The loss extends a difficult stretch for Barys, which has dropped three of its last four contests. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Magnitogorsk on Nov. 29.

Metallurg’s next game is at home against Lada Togliatti on Wednesday. Barys travels to face Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on Saturday.
