Lada Togliatti at Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod
NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia (Interstat) — In a tightly contested Kontinental Hockey League matchup defined by defensive discipline and squandered opportunities, Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod blanked Lada Togliatti 2-0 on Thursday afternoon at a raucous Trade Union Sport Palace.
The victory, anchored by a stifling team defense and a 23-save shutout from goaltender Denis Kostin, allowed Torpedo to exact a measure of revenge after Lada had defeated them in a shootout just six days prior. The win improves Torpedo’s record across all competitions to 12-9, while Lada’s struggles continued, dropping them to 5-15 on the season.
The game’s outcome defied the flow of play in the early minutes, as Lada found itself on the penalty kill just 3:57 into the first period after a bench minor for too many players on the ice. Torpedo’s potent power play needed less than a minute to capitalize. At the 4:46 mark, forward Maxim Letunov netted his third goal of the season, converting a precise passing sequence from Yegor Sokolov and Alexei Kruchinin to give the home team an early 1-0 lead.
That goal would prove to be the only offense for nearly the entire game, as both teams settled into a grinding, penalty-filled affair. The opening period saw two more minor penalties, and the second frame was marred by a parade to the penalty box, with Lada taking three consecutive infractions. Despite the numerous power plays, neither team could solve the opposing goaltender or break through the defensive structures.
Torpedo’s defensive corps, featuring Sergei Boikov, Daniil Zhuravlyov, Bogdan Konyushkov, Robert Nardella, Alexander A. Pelevin, Anton Sizov, and the towering Anton Silayev, effectively bottled up the Lada attack, limiting high-danger chances and clearing rebounds from in front of Kostin. Lada’s frustration was evident, particularly from forward Vladislav Syomin, who took two penalties in a span of just over two minutes late in the second period.
As the game entered the third period with the narrow one-goal margin, Torpedo continued to clamp down, suffocating Lada’s attempts to build offensive zone pressure. The insurance goal finally came with just 1:23 remaining in regulation. Alexander Yaremchuk sealed the victory for Torpedo, firing his third goal of the season into an empty net after Lada had pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker, with Vasily Atanasov credited with the assist.
The final minutes saw tempers flare, resulting in matching roughing and slashing penalties for Torpedo’s Konyushkov and Lada’s Andrei Chivilev, but the outcome was no longer in doubt.
The shutout loss extends a difficult stretch for Lada, which has now been held to two goals or fewer in four of its last five contests. The team’s recent history shows a pattern of defensive lapses and an inability to generate consistent offense, having been outscored 17-5 in its last five games, excluding the shootout win over Torpedo.
For Torpedo, the victory reinforces a positive trend, marking their third win in their last four outings. The team has shown a knack for bouncing back from defeats, having not lost consecutive games in regulation since a three-game skid in early October. The win also solidifies their strong play on home ice at the Trade Union Sport Palace.
The result slightly underperformed the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 3-1 Torpedo victory, though the outcome aligned with the system’s ELO rating that gave the home team a 67.90 percent probability of winning.
Lada will look to regroup quickly as it continues a difficult road trip, traveling next to face Ak Bars Kazan on Saturday. Torpedo, meanwhile, embarks on a lengthy road swing of its own, beginning Sunday in Yekaterinburg against Avtomobilist.
