CSKA Moscow at Spartak Moscow
MOSCOW (Interstat) — Adam Ruzicka scored with 40 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Spartak Moscow to a 3-2 victory over rival CSKA Moscow in a Kontinental Hockey League match on Tuesday afternoon at Luzhniki Minor Arena.
The dramatic finish, coming on a power play, gave Spartak its second win over CSKA this season and improved its record to 11-9. CSKA fell to 9-10.
The game-winning play was set up by a relentless Spartak power-play unit. With CSKA’s Nikita Nesterov in the penalty box for roughing, Spartak applied heavy pressure. Nathan Todd fed the puck to Joseph Keane at the point, who fired a shot that created a scramble in front of the CSKA net. Ruzicka found the loose puck and buried it for his fifth goal of the season, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Keane was instrumental in the victory, finishing with three assists. His performance quarterbacking the Spartak power play was a central factor, as all three Spartak goals were scored with the man advantage.
The game began with early penalties dictating the pace. CSKA’s Prokhor Poltapov was sent off for hooking just four minutes into the first period, and Spartak capitalized 19 seconds into the power play. Nathan Todd netted his eighth goal of the season, with Keane and Mikhail Maltsev picking up the assists.
CSKA responded midway through the period when Poltapov atoned for his penalty, scoring his third goal of the season at the 11:22 mark to tie the game. Nikita Okhotyuk and Ivan Drozdov were credited with the assists.
Another CSKA penalty late in the first period proved costly. With Pavel Karnaukhov serving a holding minor, Spartak’s power play struck again. Maltsev scored his third of the year, with Adam Ruzicka and Keane assisting, to restore Spartak’s lead.
The second period saw the teams trade power-play goals. After Spartak’s Daniil R. Orlov was penalized for hooking, CSKA’s Daniel Sprong scored his ninth goal of the season to knot the game at 2-2. The period ended with a series of coincidental and individual penalties, setting the stage for a tense third period.
Both teams had opportunities in the final frame, but discipline issues continued for CSKA. A holding penalty to Karnaukhov, his second of the game, was successfully killed off, but a late roughing call against Nesterov with just over two minutes to play proved fatal. Spartak’s top-ranked power play, which entered the game converting at a league-best rate, needed just one minute and twenty seconds of the advantage to secure the victory with Ruzicka’s late heroics.
The game was a special teams battle, with Spartak converting on three of its six power-play opportunities. CSKA went one for four with the man advantage. The victory gives Spartak a sweep of the early-season Moscow derby matches, having also defeated CSKA in a shootout on Sept. 16.
According to Interstat, the final score matched its game simulator’s projection. Its ELO rating system had given Spartak a 54 percent probability to win.
The loss halts a modest two-game winning streak for CSKA, which had previously defeated Amur Khabarovsk and SKA St. Petersburg. Spartak has now won two straight following a 5-0 loss to Dynamo Moscow last Thursday.
CSKA’s next game is on the road against Dynamo Moscow on Saturday. Spartak continues its homestand with a game against HC Sochi on Sunday.
