Shanghai Dragons vs. Dinamo Minsk

MINSK, Belarus (Interstat) — Greg McKegg scored the tying goal in the second period and the Shanghai Dragons defeated Dinamo Minsk 2-1 in a shootout Friday in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup at Minsk-Arena.

The victory improved Shanghai’s record across all competitions to 10-7, while Dinamo Minsk moved to 7-7.

The game was a tightly contested defensive battle that defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 4-3 victory for Dinamo Minsk, and its ELO system gave the Belarusian club a 71.6 percent probability of winning.

Dinamo Minsk struck first at the 9:31 mark of the opening period. Sam Anas netted his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Vitaly Pinchuk and Alex Limoges, to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Pinchuk was later assessed a minor penalty in the first period, one of the few infractions in the game.

Shanghai, known as Red Star Kunlun in previous results, found the equalizer late in the second period. With 23:04 elapsed in the game, Greg McKegg scored his first goal of the season, with an assist from Pavel Akolzin, knotting the score at 1-1.

Neither team could break the deadlock through a scoreless third period, sending the game to overtime. After the extra frame solved nothing, the contest was decided in a shootout, where the Dragons secured the extra point.

The win extends a positive trend for Shanghai, which had previously defeated Dinamo Minsk 3-2 on Oct. 9. The Dragons will look to continue their momentum on the road against Severstal Cherepovets on Sunday.

Dinamo Minsk, coming off a 4-0 shutout of Lada Togliatti on Wednesday, will aim to rebound when they host HC Sochi on Tuesday.
