Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod at Lada Togliatti

TOLYATTI, Russia (Interstat) — In a stunning Kontinental Hockey League upset, the Lada Togliatti defeated Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 3-2 in a shootout Friday afternoon at Lada Arena, snapping a three-game losing streak and handing Torpedo a bitter loss despite a dominant performance in shots on goal.

The victory, secured in the tiebreaker after a scoreless overtime period, was backstopped by an extraordinary 48-save performance from Lada goaltender Ivan Bocharov. The netminder stood on his head, repeatedly turning away a relentless Torpedo attack that outshot Lada 50-24 through 65 minutes of play.

Lada, which improved its season record to 5 wins and 13 losses across all competitions, was outplayed for long stretches but capitalized on key opportunities to secure just its fifth victory of the campaign. Torpedo, which fell to 10-9, saw a two-game winning streak snapped in a game they were heavily favored to win. Pre-game projections from Interstat gave Torpedo a 63.10 percent probability of victory and predicted a 2-1 final score.

The game began against the run of play as the home team struck first. At the 4:37 mark of the opening period, Lada’s Andrei Chivilev netted his sixth goal of the season, assisted by Dmitry Kugryshev, to give his team an early 1-0 lead.

Torpedo responded just over ten minutes later. Andrei Belevich scored his second of the season at 14:58 of the first, with helpers from Viktor S. Fyodorov and Anton Sizov, tying the game 1-1.

The visitors then took their first lead of the afternoon late in the second period. With just 32 seconds remaining before the second intermission, Shane Prince found the back of the net for his third goal, assisted by Denis Alexandrov and Maxim Letunov, sending Torpedo into the final frame with a 2-1 advantage.

The one-goal lead held for most of the third period as Bocharov continued his heroics in the Lada crease. However, with just over two minutes left in regulation, Lada found the equalizer. At the 17:04 mark of the third, Georgy Belousov scored his first goal of the season, a crucial tally assisted by defenseman Mac Hollowell and Nikita Mikhailov, to force overtime.

After a frantic but scoreless five-minute three-on-three overtime period, the game proceeded to a shootout where Lada ultimately prevailed to claim the extra point.

The win provides a massive morale boost for a Lada team that had been struggling profoundly. Prior to this game, they had been shut out in two of their last three contests, including a 4-0 loss to Dinamo Minsk on Wednesday. The victory also avenges a 5-3 loss to this same Torpedo team just five days prior on Oct. 19.

For Torpedo, the loss is a missed opportunity to build momentum. They were coming off a strong 3-1 road victory against HC Sochi on Wednesday and had previously handled Lada with relative ease in their two prior meetings this season, winning 5-1 in Tolyatti on Sept. 18 and 4-3 at home on Sept. 12. Their inability to solve Bocharov, despite firing 50 shots, will be a point of frustration.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again in just six days, on Thursday, Oct. 30, in Nizhny Novgorod, setting up a quick rematch.

Torpedo will look to rebound on the road Sunday, Oct. 26, against Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg. Lada continues its challenging schedule with a road game at Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
