Sibir Novosibirsk at Barys Astana

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (Interstat) — Scott Wilson scored the decisive goal in a shootout to cap a third-period comeback, lifting Sibir Novosibirsk to a 4-3 victory over Barys Astana in a Kontinental Hockey League game on Tuesday.

The game was a tale of two comebacks, with Barys erasing a three-goal deficit to force overtime before Sibir ultimately secured the extra point in the shootout at Barys Arena.

Barys dominated the early stages, building a commanding lead in the first period. Samat Daniyar opened the scoring for the home team at the 10:59 mark of the first period, assisted by Kirill Savitsky and Dinmukhamed Kaiyrzhan. Just over four minutes later, Tyce Thompson doubled the Barys advantage, with Kaiyrzhan and Reilly Walsh picking up the assists.

Sibir, which had lost 6-4 in its last visit to Astana on Sept. 27, began its rally in the second period. Vladimir Tkachyov put the visitors on the board at 8:14 of the middle frame, assisted by Wilson. The momentum continued to shift as Vladislav Kara scored just over five minutes later to cut the deficit to one goal.

Wilson then completed the second-period surge, tying the game 4-3 with a goal just 39 seconds after Kara’s, with Tkachyov and Yegor Alanov providing the assists.

Barys answered in the third period to force overtime. Defenseman Reilly Walsh scored a crucial goal at 3:21 of the final frame, assisted by Michael Vecchione and Semyon Simonov, knotting the game at 4 and ultimately sending it to a shootout.

After a scoreless overtime, Wilson’s shootout goal sealed the victory for Sibir. The win improved Sibir’s record across all competitions to 7-7, while Barys fell to 5-10.

The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat. The outlet’s game simulator had projected a 3-2 victory for Barys, while its ELO system gave Sibir a 64 percent probability to win.

Sibir’s victory marks its second straight win, following a 3-2 shootout victory at Neftekhimik on Sunday. The team will look to continue its momentum when it hosts Ak Bars Kazan on Thursday.

Barys, which has now lost four of its last five games, will try to regroup when it faces Avangard Omsk at home on Thursday.
