Dynamo Moscow at Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia (Interstat) — In a stunning Kontinental Hockey League upset, HC Dynamo Moscow mounted a furious third-period comeback to defeat Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 4-1 on Sunday at Trade Union Sport Palace, defying pregame projections and handing the home team its second consecutive loss.

The victory improved Dynamo’s record to 6-5-0, while Torpedo fell to 7-4-0.

The game’s narrative was one of two halves, with Torpedo dominating the early stages and Dynamo seizing control late. The contest began as a defensive struggle, with neither team finding the net for the first half of the opening period. Dynamo broke the deadlock at the 7:51 mark when Maxime Comtois scored his fourth goal of the season, with assists from Dylan Sikura and Igor Ozhiganov.

The first period’s physical tone was set by a cross-checking penalty against Comtois at 15:01. The middle frame saw the penalty boxes remain busy, with infractions called against Dynamo’s Maxim Dzhioshvili for tripping at 26:20 and Torpedo’s Nikita Shavin for the same offense at 33:37. Comtois returned to the box for a tripping minor at 35:29, but Torpedo could not capitalize on the ensuing power play.

Torpedo finally solved the Dynamo defense late in the second period. At 37:39, Vladislav Firstov netted his sixth goal of the campaign, cutting the deficit and providing a spark for the home team. Assists were credited to Ilya Chefanov and Nikita A. Rozhkov.

Any momentum Torpedo carried into the third period was quickly extinguished. Dynamo’s Comtois struck again just 1:55 into the final frame, scoring his fifth goal to restore the two-goal cushion. Fredrik Claesson and Cedric Paquette were credited with the assists.

Dynamo continued to press, with Artyom Ilyenko scoring his first goal of the season at 9:13, assisted by Dzhioshvili. With the Torpedo net empty for an extra attacker, Dzhioshvili sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:48, his second of the season, from Artyom Shvets-Rogovoi and Daniil Pylenkov.

The result was a stark contrast to pregame analytics. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 3-2 victory for Torpedo, and its ELO system gave Dynamo a 63.1 percent probability of winning.

Torpedo’s defensive corps was active offensively, led by Robert Nardella who registered five shots on goal. Anton Silayev added four shots and three hits, while Daniil Zhuravlyov and Bogdan Konyushkov each recorded three shots. Despite the loss, goaltender Ivan Kulbakov made 12 saves on 15 shots faced.

The game concludes a brief homestand for Torpedo, who will look to rebound when they host Metallurg Magnitogorsk on Tuesday. Dynamo, having righted the ship after a recent loss, returns home to face Salavat Yulaev Ufa on Wednesday.
