Traktor Chelyabinsk at Red Star Kunlun

MYTISHCHI, Russia (Interstat) — In a stunning overtime victory that defied statistical projections, the Shanghai Dragons defeated Traktor Chelyabinsk 5-4 in a Kontinental Hockey League game Saturday at Municipal‘nyj Stadion Stroitel‘.

The game-winning goal came just 54 seconds into the extra period, with Nick Merkley netting his sixth of the season to complete a dramatic comeback for the home team. Gage Quinney and Joseph Duszak assisted on the decisive play.

The outcome was unexpected, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Traktor a 74.90 percent probability to win, projecting a final score of 3-2 in favor of Shanghai.

The game began as a defensive struggle, with Shanghai’s Austin Wagner breaking the deadlock late in the first period. The goal, assisted by Ryan Spooner and Nikita A. Popugayev, gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead that held deep into the second period.

The contest erupted in the latter half of the second period. Shanghai doubled its lead on a power-play goal from Borna Rendulic, with Adam Clendening and Spooner earning assists. Traktor responded less than a minute later, cutting the deficit to 2-1 on a goal from Grigory Dronov.

Traktor’s Andrei Nikonov then scored to tie the game, but Wagner answered for Shanghai just 27 seconds later, restoring the Dragons’ lead with his second goal of the night. Assists went to Popugayev and Jake Bischoff.

The third period saw Traktor mount its own comeback. Pierrick Dube scored to bring the visitors within one, but Shanghai’s Ryan Spooner responded to make it 4-3. With just over a minute remaining in regulation, Traktor’s Mikhail Grigorenko scored to tie the game and force overtime, setting the stage for Merkley’s heroics.

The game was a penalty-filled affair, with both teams taking four minor penalties. Traktor’s Alexander Kadeikin was penalized twice, for holding the stick and for throwing the puck outside the playing area.

With the win, Shanghai improved its season record to 7-4. The Dragons’ recent form has been strong, with this victory marking their third win in their last four outings. Traktor’s record fell to 5-6 with the overtime loss, continuing a difficult stretch for the Chelyabinsk-based club.

Shanghai’s defensive corps, including Bischoff, Alexander Bryntsev, Duszak, Clendening, Will Reilly and Doyle Somerby, played a key role in front of goaltender Patrik Rybar to secure the victory.

The Dragons next play Tuesday at Spartak Moscow. Traktor’s next contest is Monday at Dinamo Minsk.
