Sibir Novosibirsk at Salavat Yulaev Ufa

UFA, Russia (Interstat) — Alexander Khokhlachyov scored twice to lead Salavat Yulaev Ufa to a 5-2 victory over Sibir Novosibirsk in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup on Wednesday night at Ufa Arena.

The win, just the second of the season for Salavat Yulaev, was fueled by a dominant second-period outburst that saw the home team erase a one-goal deficit with four unanswered goals.

Sibir opened the scoring late in the first period. At the 13:24 mark, Vladimir Tkachyov netted his second goal of the season, with assists from Nikita Soshnikov and Scott Wilson. The visitors’ lead was short-lived, however, as Salavat Yulaev answered on a power play just over four minutes later. With Sibir’s Pavel Gogolev in the box for hooking, Jack Rodewald capitalized on the man-advantage, scoring his second of the year at 18:16 with helpers from Alexander Zharovsky and Ilya Fedotov.

The game turned decisively in the middle frame. After a relatively quiet start to the period, Khokhlachyov gave Salavat Yulaev its first lead of the night at 25:33, scoring his first goal of the season off assists from Prokhor Korbit and Vladislav Yefremov.

The floodgates then opened. Artyom Gorshkov extended the lead to 3-1 at 33:07, with Alexander S. Komarov earning the assist. Khokhlachyov struck again for his second of the game at 35:08, with Korbit collecting his second assist of the period alongside Yaroslav Tsulygin. Defenseman Nikita Zorkin capped the four-goal period, scoring his first at 36:17 to make it 5-1. Fedotov and Gorshkov were credited with the assists.

Sibir managed a late consolation goal with just over a minute remaining in the third period. Defenseman Timur Akhiyarov scored his first of the season, assisted by Gogolev, to bring the final score to 5-2.

The game was marked by a parade to the penalty box, with Sibir incurring five of the seven total infractions. Salavat Yulaev’s power play unit converted on one of its opportunities, while Sibir failed to score on its two chances.

The victory improves Salavat Yulaev’s season record to 2-7-0, providing a much-needed boost after a difficult start. The loss drops Sibir to 4-6-0 on the season. The result avenged a shootout loss for Salavat Yulaev in the teams’ previous meeting just a week prior in Novosibirsk.

The outcome defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had simulated a 3-2 victory for Sibir, though the ELO system had given Salavat Yulaev a 66.10 percent probability to win.

Sibir will look to rebound when they return home to host Barys Astana on Sunday. Salavat Yulaev continues its homestand, also on Sunday, against HC Sochi. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Novosibirsk on Oct. 23.
