MOSCOW (Interstat) — Jordan Weal scored 3 minutes into overtime to lift Dynamo Moscow to a 3-2 victory over the Shanghai Dragons in a Kontinental Hockey League game Wednesday afternoon at VTB Ice Palace.
The game-winner came after Dynamo Moscow goalie Maxim Motorygin started the play with a pass to Nikita Gusev, who then set up Weal for his third goal of the season. The goal capped a back-and-forth contest that saw three goals scored in a frantic 2-minute, 53-second span during the first period.
Dynamo Moscow improved to 4-4-0 with the win, while Shanghai fell to 3-4-0.
The game began with an early push from the home side. Cedric Paquette opened the scoring for Dynamo Moscow at the 10:27 mark of the first period, netting his second goal of the season with assists from Dylan Sikura and Artyom Sergeyev.
The momentum shifted quickly after Dynamo Moscow’s Kirill Gotovets was sent off for tripping at 12:07. On the ensuing power play, Shanghai’s Nate Sucese evened the score just 13 seconds into the man-advantage, beating Motorygin for his first goal. The Dragons seized the lead only 53 seconds later when Vladimir Kuznetsov also scored his first of the season, with assists from Will Reilly and Sucese.
Dynamo Moscow responded before the period ended. Sikura tied the game at 2-2 with 3:40 remaining in the first, scoring his first goal off a feed from Nikita Gusev.
The offensive flurry settled after the first period, with both goaltenders taking control. Motorygin finished the afternoon with a strong performance for Dynamo Moscow, while Shanghai’s Patrik Rybar was equally stout in net, turning aside numerous chances to force the extra frame.
Shanghai’s penalty kill was tested in the third period, successfully killing off a tripping penalty to Jake Bischoff midway through the period. Dynamo Moscow was assessed seven penalty minutes on four infractions, while Shanghai served six minutes on three penalties.
The result aligned with projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 3-1 Dynamo Moscow victory. The service’s ELO system gave the home team a 79.10 percent probability to win.
Dynamo Moscow will next host Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk on Monday. Shanghai continues its road trip Friday against Lada Togliatti. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Shanghai for a pair of games in mid-October.
