Lokomotiv Yaroslavl at CSKA Moscow
MOSCOW (Interstat) — Rushan Rafikov scored a goal and added an assist, and Daniil Isayev made 17 saves to backstop Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to a decisive 5-1 victory over CSKA Moscow in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup on Thursday afternoon at CSKA Ice Palace.
The visiting Lokomotiv seized control early and never relented, handing their Moscow rivals a lopsided defeat that was not reflected in pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a much closer 3-2 final, with Lokomotiv given a 68.5% probability to win.
Lokomotiv improved its season record to 4-2-0, while CSKA fell to an even 3-3-0.
Georgy Ivanov opened the scoring for Lokomotiv just over six minutes into the first period, netting his second goal of the season. CSKA’s Denis Guryanov answered near the 13-minute mark, capitalizing on a power play with assists from Vitaly Abramov and Daniel Sprong to tie the game at 1-1. It was Guryanov’s team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The tie was short-lived. Lokomotiv’s offense erupted in the second period with three unanswered goals. Rafikov, a defenseman, restored Lokomotiv’s lead at the 22:43 mark, firing a shot past CSKA goaltender Spencer Martin with an assist from Alexander Polunin.
Yegor Surin extended the lead to 3-1 just over ten minutes later, scoring his fifth goal of the season on a play set up by Artur Kayumov and Rafikov. Defenseman Alexander Yelesin then netted his first goal of the campaign with just over three minutes remaining in the period, making it 4-1.
Artur Kayumov sealed the victory early in the third period, scoring his first goal of the season at the 46:03 mark to bring the final score to 5-1.
Lokomotiv’s discipline was tested throughout the game, as the team was whistled for eight penalties totaling 16 minutes. CSKA was assessed five penalties for 10 minutes. Despite the disparity, Lokomotiv’s penalty kill unit, backed by Isayev’s steady play in net, held firm, allowing only Guryanov’s first-period power-play goal. Martin took the loss for CSKA, making 22 saves on 26 shots.
Lokomotiv continues its road stretch with a game at HC Sochi on Monday. CSKA embarks on a lengthy road trip, starting Sunday at Metallurg Magnitogorsk. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Yaroslavl on Oct. 15.
