Red Star Kunlun at Admiral Vladivostok
VLADIVOSTOK, Russia (Interstat) — Goaltender Adam Huska recorded a 32-save shutout and the Admiral Vladivostok defense smothered the Shanghai Dragons in a 4-0 Kontinental Hockey League victory Wednesday night at Fetisov Arena.
The shutout was the first of the season for Huska, who was perfect against all 32 shots he faced from a Shanghai offense that entered the game averaging over three goals per contest. The performance anchored a complete effort from the home side, which improved its season record to 3-2-0.
Shanghai, which fell to 2-3-0, was held scoreless despite a strong effort in net from its own goaltender, Patrik Rybar, who made 27 saves on 31 shots.
After a scoreless and penalty-marred first period that saw both teams struggle to generate sustained offense, Admiral broke through midway through the second. Defenseman Mario Grman, a native of Topolcany, Slovakia, and forward Arkady Shestakov set up Semyon Koshelev for the game’s first goal at the 26:23 mark.
The home team doubled its lead just over four minutes later. At 30:41 of the second period, Pavel Shen netted his second goal of the season, with assists credited to Stepan Starkov and Daniil Gutik.
Admiral put the game out of reach in the third period. Defenseman Semyon Ruchkin scored his first of the season, unassisted, at 48:26. Alexander Daryin sealed the 4-0 victory with a goal at 55:46, assisted by Alexander Shepelev and Pavel Koledov.
The game was a physical affair, with the teams combining for seven penalties. Admiral was whistled for four infractions, including a tripping call against Dmitry Zavgorodny in the first period and an interference penalty against Georgy Solyannikov in the second. Shanghai was assessed three penalties, including a cross-checking call against Jake Bischoff and a bench minor for too many players on the ice served by Max Ellis.
The result avenged a previous meeting between the two teams just over a week prior, on Sept. 8, when Admiral needed a shootout to defeat Shanghai 4-3.
Admiral looks to continue its momentum Saturday when it hosts Dynamo Moscow. Shanghai, officially listed as Red Star Kunlun in the league standings, continues a difficult road trip with a game against Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod on Monday.
The final score was a surprise based on pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 2-1 victory for Shanghai, though its ELO rating system gave Admiral a 56.7 percent probability to win.
