Doosan Bears blank Samsung Lions 7‑0 at Jamsil
SEOUL (Interstat) — Gwak Been pitched six dominant innings and the Doosan Bears defeated the Samsung Lions 7-0 on Sunday evening at Jamsil Stadium, clinching a split of a three-game series in front of 23,750 fans.
Gwak allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked none, lowering his ERA while giving the Bears an early cushion. The right-hander retired 10 straight batters at one point and faced only one batter beyond the minimum through five innings.
Doosan took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning against Samsung starter Voth Austin. Yunior Severino led off with a double down the right-field line. After a flyout moved him to third, Yang Eui-ji singled to left to drive in Severino. Kim Min-seok singled and An Jae-seok doubled to right-center, scoring Yang and giving the Bears a two-run advantage.
The Bears added two more in the sixth. Austin was pulled after allowing five hits and two earned runs over five innings, striking out five. Reliever Bae Chan-seung entered but struggled with command. Kang Seung-ho scored on a single by Kim Min-seok that also advanced Park Jun-soon to third. Kim Min-seok took second on an error during the play, but An Jae-seok lined out and Kim Dae-han grounded out to end the inning with Doosan ahead 3-0.
The Bears broke the game open in the eighth. Bae walked two batters and hit Kang Seung-ho to load the bases with no outs. Yang Eui-ji doubled down the left-field line, clearing the bases and making it 5-0. An Jae-seok added an RBI single to center, and the Bears took a 6-0 lead. The inning ended when Kim Dae-han grounded into a double play.
Samsung’s offense never threatened. The Lions managed only four hits total, two by Kim Ji-chan. Gwak neutralized the heart of the batting order, striking out Koo Ja-wook twice and Lewin Diaz twice. Samsung’s best scoring chance came in the eighth inning, when they loaded the bases with two outs, but reliever Lee Young-ha entered and struck out Lewin Diaz to end the threat.
Yang Eui-ji finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs, including the pivotal double in the eighth. An Jae-seok went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
For Samsung, Lee Jae-hee pitched a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts. Bae Chan-seung recorded two outs in the eighth but was charged with the runs that crossed on Yang’s double.
The game lasted 2 hours, 45 minutes.
Samsung dropped to 57-35-2, still atop the standings, while Doosan improved to 48-44-2. The Bears had lost the first two games of the series by scores of 4-1 and 15-4, but rebounded with a complete performance Sunday.
Doosan’s bullpen held Samsung scoreless over the final three innings. Lee Young-ha, Kim Taek-yeon and Kim Jeong-woo combined for three innings of one-hit relief, striking out four. Kim Taek-yeon allowed a single but worked around it.
Samsung’s offense, which had scored 19 runs in the previous two games, was stifled entirely. The Lions struck out 12 times as a team and went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
The series was the third consecutive meeting between the two clubs dating to May. Doosan had won four of the previous six matchups, but Samsung took the first two of this weekend set before Sunday’s shutout loss.
Both teams have off Monday before resuming their schedules Tuesday. Samsung returns home to host the Kia Tigers in a three-game series at Daegu Samsung Lions Park. Doosan travels to face the Shinsegae Landers in Seoul.
For Samsung, the loss snapped a four-game winning streak. The Lions had won their previous four contests, including a 3-1 victory over the Kiwoom Heroes in 11 innings Thursday.
Doosan ended a three-game skid with the win. The Bears had lost their last three games, all to KT Wiz, though two of those games ended in ties.
Key performers Sunday included Gwak Been, who threw 78 pitches, 58 for strikes, and recorded eight strikeouts without a walk. He induced 12 swings and misses and was never in significant trouble.
Austin, the losing pitcher, allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out five and walking one. He threw 87 pitches and left with his team trailing 2-0.
The most important sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Severino’s leadoff double, Park Jun-soon’s flyout to center moved Severino to third. Yang Eui-ji then delivered a clean single to left field, breaking the scoreless tie. Kim Min-seok followed with a single, and An Jae-seok doubled to right-center, plating Yang. That two-run outburst gave Doosan a lead it never relinquished and set the tone for the rest of the night.
Samsung threatened only once, in the top of the eighth. Kang Min-ho walked to lead off. Kim Ji-chan singled, putting runners at first and second with no outs. A flyout and a strikeout followed, but Choi Hyoung-woo walked to load the bases with two outs. Lewin Diaz, representing the tying run, struck out swinging on a 1-2 pitch from Lee Young-ha, ending the inning.
Doosan answered immediately in the bottom half, scoring three runs to put the game away.
The Bears’ bullpen, which had been shaky in the previous two games, worked efficiently. Kim Taek-yeon pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit but striking out two. Kim Jeong-woo closed the game with a perfect ninth.
Samsung’s bullpen also performed well outside of the eighth-inning meltdown. Lee Jae-hee struck out two in the seventh, and Bae Chan-seung got two outs in the eighth before being lifted.
The game featured no home runs. All seven Doosan runs were driven in by singles or doubles.
Samsung’s next game is Tuesday against Kia. Doosan plays Tuesday against Shinsegae.
