KT at LG

SEOUL (Interstat) — The LG Twins host the KT Wiz on Sunday evening at Jamsil Stadium in a pivotal KBO series finale, with the first-place Twins seeking to extend their lead in the standings.

LG enters the game with a 52-33-2 record, while the Wiz sit at 47-35-1. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 76 degrees. Interstat’s ELO system gives the Twins a 59.70 percent probability of victory, with a projected final score of LG 4, KT 3.

The series has been an unusual one. The first three games (Interstat) — Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Interstat) — all ended in 0-0 ties. Sunday’s contest will break that deadlock.

LG will turn to left-hander Lachlan Wells (4-3, 3.86 ERA) as its starter. Wells has been inconsistent recently. In his last outing July 9 at Samsung, he allowed two earned runs on five hits over five innings with five strikeouts in a 6-5 loss. Three starts earlier, he threw five scoreless innings against Doosan on June 21. But he also struggled June 27 at Lotte, surrendering four earned runs in just three innings.

The Twins’ offense has been backed by a deep bullpen. In their most recent win July 8 at Samsung (Interstat) — an 8-2 decision (Interstat) — relievers Woo Kang-hoon and Kim Jin-sung combined for 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

KT will counter with a bullpen game, relying heavily on reliever Lee Sang-dong. Lee has been volatile. He threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings against Kiwoom on July 8, striking out two, but was tagged for six earned runs in 1/3 of an inning June 26 at Samsung. In eight appearances since June 21, Lee has allowed eight earned runs in 6 1/3 innings, with 10 strikeouts and four walks. The Wiz will also lean on relievers Son Dong-hyun and Park Yeong-hyun, who each threw a scoreless inning in Wednesday’s 7-3 win over Kiwoom.

The season series is tightly contested. LG holds a 5-4 edge in head-to-head matchups, including a 5-4 record in the past nine meetings. The Twins took two of three at KT from June 2-4, winning 10-1 and 6-5 after dropping the opener 7-6.

Whoever wins Sunday will gain critical momentum. The Twins, who lead the KBO by 2 1/2 games over the Wiz, open a three-game home series against NC on Tuesday. KT faces a three-game set at home against Doosan the same day.
