KT Wiz edge LG Twins 4‑1 at Jamsil Stadium
SEOUL (Interstat) — Jang Sung-woo hit a solo home run and drove in two runs as the KT Wiz beat the LG Twins 4-1 on Sunday night at Jamsil Stadium, completing a four-game sweep of their South Korean baseball rivals.
Jang’s eighth-inning blast broke a 1-0 lead into a two-run cushion, and KT added two more runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach. The Wiz improved to 51-35-1, while the Twins fell to 52-37-2.
KT struck first in the second inning. Oh Yoon-suk led off with a double down the left-field line, and after a walk to Cho Dae-hyun, Kwon Dong-jin singled to center to score Oh. Choi Won-joon followed with a single to load the bases, but the Wiz could not add more. The 1-0 lead held through the middle innings as both teams struggled to generate sustained offense.
LG threatened in the seventh when Moon Jeong-bin and Oh Ji-hwan drew walks, and Lee Jae-won singled to load the bases with one out. But KT escaped when Park Dong-won and Gu Bon-hyeok struck out in succession.
Jang changed the game in the eighth. Facing a 1-0 deficit, the designated hitter crushed a home run to center field, his second hit of the night. Heo Kyoung-min followed with an infield single, but a popout and a sacrifice bunt left him at second before Kwon Dong-jin singled to center. Heo advanced to third, but the inning ended with no further scoring.
The Wiz broke the game open in the ninth. Choi Won-joon walked, Kim Hyeon-su struck out, and Ahn Hyun-min was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Sam Hilliard then singled to left, scoring Choi and advancing Bae Jeong-dae — who had entered as a pinch-runner for Ahn — to third. Jang Sung-woo followed with a single to left that plated Bae, making it 4-0. Heo Kyoung-min grounded into a double play to end the inning.
LG finally got on the board in the bottom of the ninth. Moon Sung-ju singled, and after Song Chan-eui flied out, Austin Dean was hit by a pitch. Moon Bo-gyeong struck out, but Park Hae-min — pinch-hitting for Moon Jeong-bin — reached on an error that allowed Moon Sung-ju to score from second. The rally stalled when Oh Ji-hwan grounded out to end the game.
Jang finished 2 for 4 with the home run and two RBIs. Heo Kyoung-min and Choi Won-joon each had two hits for KT, which totaled 10 hits. Sam Hilliard went 1 for 5 with an RBI. Oh Yoon-suk doubled and scored. The Wiz’s pitching staff allowed seven hits and struck out 12 while walking four.
For LG, Moon Sung-ju had two hits. Austin Dean singled and was hit by a pitch. The Twins left eight runners on base and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.
The game lasted 3 hours, 7 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 21,515.
KT’s sweep extended its winning streak against LG to four games, following victories of 4-3, 6-1 and 8-2 earlier in the series. The Wiz have won 11 of their last 13 meetings with the Twins dating to late March.
The Wiz return home to face the Doosan Bears on Tuesday. LG hosts the NC Dinos on the same night.
