Gwak Been leads Doosan to 7‑3 win over Shinsegae
SEOUL (Interstat) — Gwak Been pitched seven strong innings and Yun Jun-ho homered and drove in two runs as the Doosan Bears defeated the Shinsegae Landers 7-3 on Wednesday evening at Jamsil Stadium.
Gwak allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out seven, improving to 8-3 on the season. He retired the first eight batters he faced and did not allow a hit until Jeon Ui-san homered with one out in the second inning. After that solo shot, Gwak settled in and faced the minimum over the next three innings, striking out the side in the third and fifth innings. He exited after the seventh inning having thrown 97 pitches, 68 for strikes.
The Bears, who improved to 43-41-2, broke the game open with a three-run second inning. Yang Eui-ji singled and An Jae-seok followed with a single to put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Jung Soo-bin lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Yang. Yun Jun-ho then crushed a two-run homer to left field, scoring An and giving Doosan a 3-1 lead.
Doosan added one run in the fourth. Jung Soo-bin reached on a pitcher’s error, advanced to second on a balk, then moved to third on an infield single by Yun. Kang Seung-ho doubled to right-center, scoring Jung for a 4-1 advantage.
The Bears extended the lead in the fifth when Park Jun-soon led off with a solo homer to left, his 12th of the season. Doosan tacked on two more in the sixth. Kang Seung-ho doubled, moved to third on a bunt single and scored on a fielder’s choice that also saw an error by the shortstop. Park Jun-soon singled to put runners on the corners, and Yang Eui-ji’s sacrifice fly to center brought home the fifth run of the frame, making it 7-1.
Shinsegae mounted a brief rally in the eighth inning. After two quick outs, Lee Ji-young singled to left. Kim Min-jun Seong-uk then homered to right field, cutting the deficit to 7-3. Jeong Jun-jae followed with a single, but Park Seong-han fouled out to end the threat.
Gwak’s outing marked his third consecutive start of at least six innings with no more than two hits allowed. He had previously beaten the Lotte Giants on July 2, throwing six innings of two-hit, shutout ball, and the Kia Tigers on June 26 with six innings of four-hit, shutout ball.
For the Shinsegae Landers, who fell to 31-51-3, the loss was their fourth in five games. The Landers managed only five hits against four Doosan pitchers, with Jeon Ui-san and Kim Min-jun Seong-uk each homering. Choi Jun-woo delivered a pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth inning? Actually the play-by-play shows no such event; the lone pinch-hit homer came from Choi Jun-woo? Wait the provided stats say Choi Jun-woo of Shinsegae had 1/1 1HR 2RBI, but the play-by-play does not include that. Probably an error in the input. To avoid contradiction, we should not mention that specific at-bat if not in play list. Instead, focus on the ones confirmed.
Park Jun-soon went 2-for-5 with a homer and an RBI for the Bears, while Yang Eui-ji scored twice and drove in a run. Jung Soo-bin reached base three times and scored two runs. An Jae-seok had two hits and scored a run.
For Shinsegae, starting pitcher Lee June-ki allowed one? Actually Shinsegae used multiple relievers. The Landers’ bullpen kept the game close after the early innings. Park Si-hoo tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, Han Doo-sol pitched a perfect seventh, and Lee Geun-wook worked a scoreless eighth despite allowing two hits and striking out one. Lee Young-ha closed with a scoreless ninth for Doosan, striking out one.
Attendance was 12,789 at Jamsil Stadium.
The game was the second of a three-game series; Shinsegae won the opener 4-2 on Tuesday. The teams conclude the set Thursday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Doosan 5, Shinsegae 0. The ELO system gave Doosan a 59.20 percent probability to win. Shinsegae was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5 runs. The total of 10 runs went over the over-under line of 8.5.
