KT Wiz defeat Kiwoom Heroes 5‑1 behind early outburst

SEOUL (Interstat) — Wes Boushley pitched six dominant innings, striking out 10 and allowing only three hits, as the KT Wiz defeated the Kiwoom Heroes 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Gocheok Sky Dome.

Boushley, who improved to 7-3 with a 2.34 ERA, retired the first nine batters he faced and did not allow a runner past second base until the fourth inning. He struck out the side in the fifth inning and finished with 102 pitches, 68 for strikes. The right-hander’s performance was the latest in a strong stretch — he had thrown seven scoreless innings against Doosan on May 26.

The Wiz provided early support with two runs in the top of the first inning. Choi Won-joon led off with a double to center-right and advanced to third on a flyout. Ryu Hyun-in doubled to left-center to score Choi, and Heo Kyoung-min followed with a single to center-left to plate Ryu.

KT added two more runs in the fifth. Kwon Dong-jin walked, moved to third on a single by Choi and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kim Hyun-soo. Ryu singled, and Sam Hilliard singled to right to drive in Choi and extend the lead to 4-0.

Kim Hyun-soo provided the final run in the seventh inning with a solo home run to right-center, his second homer of the season. It came against Kiwoom reliever Kanakubo Yuto, who allowed one run on one hit over one inning.

Kiwoom’s only run came in the eighth inning when pinch hitter Park Chae-wool homered to center field off KT reliever Park Yeong-hyun. The Heroes threatened to add more when Gwon Hyuk-bin walked, but Seo Geon-chang grounded into a double play — a 1-6-3 turn started by Boushley’s replacement — and Keston Hiura grounded out to end the inning.

Park Yeong-hyun struck out two in the eighth, and Kim Min-su struck out two in the ninth to close the game. Both relievers allowed one hit and no runs.

Kiwoom starter Park Jun-hyun took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings, walking two and striking out three.

The Wiz bullpen combined for three scoreless innings, with Park Yeong-hyun and Kim Min-su each working a clean frame despite allowing one hit apiece. Yun Seok-won of the Heroes pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, and Park Jin-hyung threw a scoreless inning with no hits or walks.

The game marked the third consecutive victory for KT in the four-game series, following wins of 8-7 on Saturday and 7-1 on Friday. The Wiz improved to 32-20-1, while the Heroes fell to 20-34-1.

Kiwoom’s defense did not commit an error, and the Heroes’ bullpen held the Wiz scoreless in five of the last six innings after the fifth. But Boushley’s dominance and the early two-run first inning proved decisive.

Boushley faced only one jam. In the bottom of the fourth, An Chi-hong singled and Choi Joo-hwan singled to put runners on first and second with two outs. Boushley responded by striking out Lee Hyung-jong on three pitches. He then struck out the side in the fifth — Kim Gun-hee, Park Chae-wool and Gwon Hyuk-bin on 13 pitches.

The Wiz totaled 10 hits, with Choi Won-joon going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Ryu Hyun-in had three hits, including two doubles, and scored once. Kim Hyun-soo drove in two runs on his sacrifice fly and home run.

Kiwoom managed seven hits, including two each from An Chi-hong and Choi Joo-hwan. Lim Byeong-wuk went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, but it was the only extra-base hit for the Heroes.

The game was played in 2 hours and 42 minutes before an announced crowd of 12,047.

KT travels home to face the LG Twins in a three-game series beginning Tuesday. Kiwoom visits the Shinsegae Landers for a three-game set starting the same day.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of KT Wiz 5, Kiwoom Heroes 3, and its ELO system gave KT a 65.5 percent probability to win. KT was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of plus-1.5 runs. The total of five runs went over the over-under line of 7.5.
