Landers Edge Lions in Extra Innings After Late Rally Falls Short

DAEGU, South Korea (Interstat) — In a result that defied the pregame projections, the Shinsegae Landers edged the Samsung Lions 5-4 in 10 innings in a tense Korea Baseball Organization contest Tuesday night at a packed Daegu Samsung Lions Park.

The game, played before a crowd of 23,420, saw the visiting Landers scratch across the decisive run in the top of the 10th against reliever Miyaji Yura to secure the victory. The win improved Shinsegae’s record to 11-8 across all competitions, while the Lions fell to 12-6-1.

The contest was a nail-biter throughout, featuring multiple lead changes and clutch pitching performances in high-leverage situations. Interstat’s game simulator had heavily favored the Lions, projecting a 7-2 victory and giving Samsung a 58.7% probability to win as a 1.5-run favorite. The combined nine runs also fell well under the posted over/under line of 11.0, adding another layer of surprise to the evening’s outcome.

Samsung struck first in the second inning when Kang Min-ho doubled home Jeon Byeong-woo. The Lions added another run in the third on a solo home run by Park Seung-kyu and an RBI single from Lewin Diaz that scored Kim Ji-chan, who had singled and stolen second.

Shinsegae, held hitless through the first two innings, broke through in the third without the benefit of a hit. A two-out double by Lee Ji-young and walks to Park Seong-han and Jeong Jun-jae loaded the bases. Choi Jeong then reached on a critical error by Samsung third baseman Ryu Ji-hyuk, allowing Lee and Park to score and giving the Landers a 2-1 lead.

The Landers extended their lead to 4-2 in the fourth. Han Yoo-seom and Kim Seong-uk singled, and after a walk loaded the bases, Lee Ji-young drew another walk to force in a run. Park Seong-han followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Samsung chipped away, pulling within a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Ryu Ji-hyuk that scored Kim Ji-chan. The score remained 4-3 until the seventh, when Shinsegae’s Guillermo Heredia doubled to right-center, driving in Park Seong-han to restore a two-run cushion at 5-3.

The Lions mounted a dramatic rally in the bottom of the ninth against Landers reliever Kim Min. With one out, Kim Ji-chan and Choi Hyoung-woo delivered back-to-back singles. After a strikeout, Ryu Ji-hyuk atoned for his earlier error with a sharp single to center, scoring both runners to tie the game at 5-5 and send it to extra innings.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the top of the 10th. With Miyaji Yura on the mound for Samsung, Oh Tae-gon was hit by a pitch. A pitch clock violation against Yura during Lee Ji-young’s at-bat preceded a groundout that moved Oh to second. Park Seong-han then delivered the decisive blow, lacing a single to center field to score Oh with what proved to be the winning run.

Shinsegae’s bullpen, after surrendering the lead in the ninth, locked down the victory in the 10th. Jo Byeong-hyeon earned the win, pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts. After the Lions put the potential tying run on base in the bottom of the 10th, Jeon Young-jun entered to record the final out and notch the save.

The Lions outhit the Landers 11-8 but stranded 10 baserunners. Samsung starter Choi Won-tae allowed four runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings, while Shinsegae’s bullpen combination of Lee Ro-un, Moon Seung-won, Noh Kyung-eun, Jo and Jeon provided 4 2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout relief after the ninth-inning stumble.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday night in Daegu to continue their series. Shinsegae will look to build momentum before returning home to face the KT Wiz, while Samsung aims to rebound before heading to Seoul for a weekend set against the Kiwoom Heroes.
