LG Twins Shut Out Samsung Lions Behind Four-Run Fourth
DAEGU, South Korea (Interstat) — In a commanding Sunday afternoon performance at Daegu Samsung Lions Park, the LG Twins shut out the Samsung Lions 5-0 behind a masterful outing from starter Anders Tolhurst, securing a series split and tightening the race atop the standings.
A crowd of 24,000 watched as the visiting Twins, held to just two runs in a loss the previous night, flipped the script with a decisive four-run fourth inning and a lockdown effort from their pitching staff. The victory improved LG’s record to 12-6 across all competitions, while Samsung fell to 12-5-1.
The story of the game was written by LG’s arms, led by Tolhurst. The right-hander delivered six dominant innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out one. He faced minimal threat, with Samsung managing just a fifth-inning infield single by Ryu Ji-hyuk against him. Tolhurst efficiently navigated the Lions’ lineup, inducing a series of flyouts and ground balls. This performance continued a stellar run for Tolhurst, who also threw six scoreless innings against the Shinsegae Landers on April 12.
The most important sequence of the contest came in the top of the fourth against Samsung starter Won Tae-in. After two quick outs, Austin Dean ignited the rally with a triple to right field. Moon Bo-gyeong worked a walk, bringing Oh Ji-hwan to the plate. Oh delivered a sharp single to center, scoring Dean. The next batter, Cheon Seong-ho, continued his perfect day at the plate by lashing another single to center-right, driving in Moon Bo-gyeong. Park Dong-won then delivered the inning’s biggest blow, a double to left-center that scored Oh Ji-hwan and moved Cheon to third. Cheon Seong-ho would later cross the plate on a Lee Young-bin groundout, capping the four-run, four-hit outburst that provided Tolhurst with all the support he would need.
Samsung’s offense, which had produced seven runs on Saturday, was completely stifled. Beyond Ryu’s single off Tolhurst, their only other hit was a Park Seung-kyu single in the eighth inning off reliever Jang Hyun-sik. The Lions never advanced a runner past second base, as LG pitchers combined to allow just two hits and three walks while the defense turned two double plays.
LG added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Moon Bo-gyeong launched a solo home run to right field off reliever Yang Chang-seop. Cheon Seong-ho finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Following Tolhurst’s exit, the LG bullpen was flawless. Kim Young-woo, Woo Kang-hoon, and Jang Hyun-sik each contributed a scoreless inning to preserve the shutout. For Samsung, Won Tae-in took the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. Relievers Jang Chan-hee, Im Gi-yeong, and Yang Chang-seop combined for 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits.
The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a high-scoring 8-7 LG victory and whose ELO system gave LG a 51.6% chance to win. The actual total of five runs fell well under the over/under line of 10.5, with Samsung failing to cover as a +1.5 run favorite.
The Twins, after dropping the series opener, head home to host the Hanwha Eagles for a three-game set beginning Tuesday. The Lions will also remain at home, welcoming the Shinsegae Landers for a three-game series starting Tuesday.
