Bears Edge Tigers in 10 Innings on Walk-Off Error
SEOUL, South Korea (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth affair that required extra innings, the Doosan Bears rallied late and walked off with a 5-4 victory over the Kia Tigers in 10 innings on Saturday at a packed Jamsil Stadium.
A crowd of 23,750 watched as the Bears overcame a two-run deficit in the eighth inning and a one-run deficit in the tenth to snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 6-11. The Tigers fell to 10-8 despite a strong start from pitcher Oller and a late home run that appeared to seal the win.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the bottom of the tenth inning. With the Tigers leading 4-3, Kia reliever Kim Beom-su, who had entered in the eighth, remained in the game. He quickly recorded the first out. But Park Ji-hoon, who entered as a pinch-runner in the eighth, laced a single down the right field line, advancing the automatic runner, Kang Seung-ho, to third. Jung Soo-bin followed with a sharp single to center field, easily scoring Kang Seung-ho to tie the game at 4-4 and moving Park to third.
With the winning run 90 feet away and the infield drawn in, Park Chan-ho struck out for the second out. The Tigers then intentionally walked Son Ah-seop to load the bases and set up a force at any base. Facing Park Jun-soon, Kim Beom-su delivered a pitch that resulted in a dropped third strike. Catcher Park Jae-hyun’s throw to first was not in time, allowing Park Ji-hoon to sprint home with the winning run, capping a chaotic and dramatic finish.
The late-inning theatrics overshadowed a masterful pitching duel for much of the afternoon and evening. Kia’s Oller delivered his third consecutive quality start, allowing just one earned run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out five. His only blemish was an RBI single by Kim Min-seok in the third inning that scored Son Ah-seop, who had doubled.
Doosan’s Choi Seung-yong was nearly as effective, holding the Tigers to two runs on six hits across 6 2/3 innings. Kia broke through against him in the fifth. Na Sung-bum and Park Min singled, and Kim Kyu-sung followed with an RBI single to tie the game. Park Jae-hyun then gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead with another run-scoring single.
The game remained 2-1 until the top of the eighth, when Kia’s Kim Do-young launched a two-run homer off reliever Kim Taek-yeon, scoring Kim Ho-ryung who had doubled. The blast seemed to provide crucial insurance.
Doosan answered immediately in the bottom half against reliever Sung Yeong-tak. Veteran catcher Yang Eui-ji led off with a solo home run to cut the lead to 4-2. Sung navigated the next two outs but then hit Kang Seung-ho and gave up a single to Park Ji-hoon. Kim Beom-su entered and allowed an RBI single to Jung Soo-bin, making it a one-run game before striking out Park Chan-ho to end the threat with the tying run in scoring position.
Kia had a chance to extend its lead in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but Doosan reliever Yun Tae-ho induced a popout and a strikeout to escape unscathed. The Tigers again loaded the bases in the tenth against Park Shin-zi and Kim Taek-yeon but failed to score, setting the stage for Doosan’s final rally.
The Tigers outhit the Bears 10-9 but left 11 runners on base. Kim Taek-yeon earned the win despite allowing an inherited runner to score in the tenth, while Kim Beom-su took the loss for Kia.
The victory provides a measure of momentum for the struggling Bears, who had lost seven of their last eight games entering Saturday. The Tigers saw a three-game winning streak end but have still won seven of their last ten. The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
