KT Wiz Power Past Doosan Bears to Secure Series Win

SUWON-SI, South Korea (Interstat) — The KT Wiz capitalized on a decisive four-run sixth inning to pull away from the Doosan Bears and secure a 6-1 victory Sunday afternoon and evening at a sun-drenched and then electrically lit Suwon Baseball Stadium, taking the weekend series from their rivals.

A crowd of 16,488 watched as the Wiz (9-4-1) methodically broke open a tight pitchers’ duel, handing the struggling Bears (4-8-1) their eighth loss in their last ten contests. The game unfolded as a defensive struggle early before KT’s lineup delivered the crucial blows.

The most important sequence of the game arrived in the bottom of the sixth inning, transforming a narrow 2-1 lead into a commanding 5-1 advantage. With Doosan starter Choi Seung-yong already out of the game after 5 1/3 innings, reliever Tamura Ichiro entered with a runner on first. After a strikeout, Jang Sung-woo singled to left field, driving in Ahn Hyun-min. Heo Kyoung-min then laced a double down the left field line, putting runners on second and third. Following another strikeout, catcher Han Seung-taek delivered the knockout punch, a sharp single to right field that scored both Jang and Heo. That two-run single effectively put the game out of reach, turning a close contest into a comfortable Wiz lead.

The game began as a stark contrast to the offensive fireworks of the previous two nights in this series. Doosan’s lineup was stifled early by KT pitching, striking out six times in the first three innings alone. KT broke a scoreless tie in the third when Han Seung-taek led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Choi Won-joon.

KT added to its lead in the fifth. Heo Kyoung-min, who finished the day 3 for 4, singled and was driven in by an RBI infield single from Lee Gang-min after Kim Sang-su’s double had put runners in scoring position, making it 2-0.

Doosan’s offense, which mustered only six hits, finally broke through in the eighth inning against the KT bullpen. Park Chan-ho singled and Kim Min-seok walked. After a flyout advanced Park to third, veteran catcher Yang Eui-ji singled over the head of the left fielder to plate Doosan’s lone run. The Bears threatened for more but could not sustain the rally, leaving the potential tying run at the plate.

The Wiz added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth against Doosan reliever Kim Jeong-woo, who was otherwise solid in his inning of work. A walk to Sam Hilliard and a single by Heo Kyoung-min set the stage, and the run scored on a double play grounder.

KT starter Son Dong-hyun earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, part of a collective effort from the Wiz pitching staff that limited Doosan opportunities. Choi Seung-yong took the loss for Doosan, charged with four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.

The victory solidifies KT’s strong early-season form, while Doosan continues to search for consistency. The Bears’ recent results show a pattern of struggle, having lost series to Samsung, Hanwha, and now KT since late March.

The outcome defied some pregame betting indicators, as Doosan had been installed as a slight favorite on the spread, but aligned with the probability models that gave KT a 62.3 percent chance to win. The combined total of seven runs fell well under the posted over/under line of 10.5, a testament to the early-game pitching.

Both teams now look ahead to weekday series on the road. The Doosan Bears travel to face the Shinsegae Landers for a three-game set beginning Tuesday. The KT Wiz, meanwhile, head south to take on the NC Dinos, also starting a three-game series on Tuesday.
