Samsung at Kia

GWANGJU, South Korea (Interstat) — The Samsung Lions look to continue their strong start and secure a series win over the struggling Kia Tigers when the teams meet again Wednesday evening at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. local time under clear skies with a game-time temperature of 44 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius).

The Lions (5-3-1) dominated the series opener Tuesday, routing the Tigers 10-3. Samsung’s offense was powered by veteran designated hitter Choi Hyoung-woo, who went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs. Choi is batting .333 with three homers and seven RBIs over his last 10 games and will be a central figure again for the visiting side.

Conversely, the Tigers (2-7) are searching for answers after dropping seven of their first nine games. Left-hander Yang Hyeon-jong, a key figure for Kia, took the loss Tuesday despite a quality start, allowing one earned run over 5 2/3 innings. The Tigers’ bullpen subsequently faltered, surrendering nine runs.

The stark contrast in early-season form sets the stage for the second game of the midweek set. Samsung has won four of its last five, while Kia has lost four straight and seven of its last eight.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a narrow 4-3 victory for the Lions, giving Samsung a 54.6% probability of winning based on its ELO rating system.

Following Wednesday’s contest, the clubs conclude their three-game series Thursday in Gwangju. Samsung then hosts the NC Dinos for a three-game weekend series, while Kia travels to face the Hanwha Eagles starting Friday.
