Na Sung-bum Drives in Five as Kia Tigers Rout Samsung Lions in High-Scoring Affair

GWANGJU, South Korea (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune from the previous night, the Kia Tigers erupted for 19 hits and a season-high 15 runs to demolish the Samsung Lions 15-5 on Wednesday evening at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field. The offensive explosion, led by a resurgent Na Sung-bum, snapped a five-game losing streak for the Tigers and avenged a lopsided loss to the Lions just 24 hours earlier.

A crowd of 12,672 watched as the Lions (5-4-1) jumped out to a commanding five-run lead in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on control issues by Kia starter Adonis Medina. The rally was punctuated by an RBI single from Koo Ja-wook that scored Choi Hyoung-woo. It appeared the visitors were poised for a second straight rout.

The Tigers (3-7), however, responded immediately and decisively, beginning a relentless assault that would last for five innings. They chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles from Harold Castro and Na Sung-bum. The turning point, and the most important sequence of the game, arrived in the bottom of the second inning. Trailing 5-2, Kia sent 12 men to the plate and scored six runs to seize permanent control.

The inning was a cascade of clutch hits and patient at-bats. With the bases loaded and one out, Castro cleared them with a booming double over the left fielder’s head, tying the game. Na Sung-bum followed by lacing a single to right to score Castro, giving Kia its first lead. After two more singles and a walk reloaded the bases, Park Jae-hyun delivered the crushing blow, a two-run single to center that capped the six-run outburst and extended the lead to 8-5. The inning showcased a complete shift in momentum, transforming a potential blowout loss into a commanding lead for the struggling Tigers.

Kia did not relent. In the third, Kim Do-young launched a two-run homer to left. Two batters later, Na Sung-bum provided the exclamation point, crushing a two-run shot of his own to left field, stretching the advantage to 10-5. Na, who had been mired in a 2-for-19 slump over his previous five games, finished 3 for 4 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored, reclaiming his status as the team’s offensive centerpiece.

Samsung mounted a brief challenge in the fourth, scoring four runs to narrow the gap. Ryu Ji-hyuk drove in two with a single, and Choi Hyoung-woo followed with a two-run homer to right, making it 10-9. The Lions loaded the bases later in the frame but could not draw closer.

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished as the Kia bullpen slammed the door. Following Medina’s shaky start, reliever Lee Tae-yang provided critical stability with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. The Tigers then added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, with Castro driving in another run to finish 3 for 5 with four RBIs. The relief corps of Cho Sang-woo, Han Jae-seung and Choi Ji-min combined for 2 2/3 innings of scoreless work to close it out.

For Samsung, which managed 13 hits but stranded numerous runners, Choi Hyoung-woo’s two-run homer was the highlight. Reliever Im Gi-yeong offered a bright spot with 2 2/3 scoreless innings and three strikeouts, but the early damage was too severe.

The victory was a dramatic departure from pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 4-3 Samsung victory, and its ELO system gave the Lions a 54.6% probability to win. The combined 20 runs sailed over the pregame over/under line of 9.5.

The result reshuffles the early standings in the Korea Baseball Organization and provides a vital spark for the Tigers, who will look to win the series when they host the Lions again on Thursday. Samsung will aim to rebound and avoid a split in the two-game set before returning home to face the NC Dinos. Kia will embark on a road trip to face the Hanwha Eagles starting Friday.
