Austin Dean’s Two Homers Power LG Twins Past Kiwoom Heroes in Late Rally
SEOUL, South Korea (Interstat) — Austin Dean launched two home runs and drove in two as part of a perfect four-hit day, but it was an eight-inning outburst that erased a deficit and propelled the LG Twins to a 6-4 victory over the Kiwoom Heroes on Saturday afternoon at Gocheok Sky Dome.
A crowd of 16,000 watched the visiting Twins, who had mustered just one run through the first seven innings, erupt for four runs in the eighth to overtake the Heroes before Dean added a solo insurance blast in the ninth.
The win improved LG’s record to 3-4, while Kiwoom fell to 2-5 in the Korea Baseball Organization season.
The game’s pivotal shift came in the top of the eighth inning with the Twins trailing 4-1. Facing reliever Park Jin-hyung, Dean ignited the rally with a sharp single to center. Moon Bo-gyeong was then hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. Park Dong-won appeared to ground into a double play, but the Twins challenged the call at first base and it was overturned, loading the bases with no outs.
Park Jin-hyung managed to strike out Moon Sung-ju, but then lost the strike zone, walking Cheon Seong-ho to force in a run and make it 4-2. Oh Ji-hwan followed with another bases-loaded walk, cutting the deficit to 4-3 and ending Park’s outing.
Park Jeong-hun entered from the Kiwoom bullpen and was greeted by Park Hae-min, who lined a single to left-center, clearing the bases as two runs scored to give LG its first lead at 5-4. Hong Chang-ki capped the inning with an RBI infield single, pushing the advantage to 6-4.
The comeback made a winner of reliever Kim Young-woo, who worked a scoreless seventh inning. The Twins’ bullpen was dominant overall, with Kim, Woo Kang-hoo, Bae Jae-june and You Young-chan combining for four perfect innings of relief, striking out five of the 12 batters they faced.
Dean, who had homered in the fifth inning for LG’s first run, provided the final margin with a leadoff homer in the ninth, his second of the game and third in two days. The first baseman finished 4 for 4, raising his average to .385.
Kiwoom had built its early lead against LG starter Im Chan-kyu, who lasted five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits. The Heroes scored two in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles by Kim Gun-hee and Park Joo-hong. They added two more in the third, capitalizing on an error. Choi Joo-hwan scored on a sacrifice fly by Kim Gun-hee, and Park Chan-hyeok came home on a fielder’s choice by Park Joo-hong.
Heroes starter Ha Yeong-min was effective, holding the Twins to one run on four hits over five innings while striking out four. He left with a 4-1 lead that the bullpen could not preserve.
The victory flipped the script from the previous night, when Kiwoom defeated LG 5-2. According to pregame projections from Interstat, LG had a 70.8% probability to win, with a simulated final score of 5-2. The total of 10 runs went over the closing over/under line of 8.5, though Kiwoom, installed as a +1.5 underdog, failed to cover the spread.
LG’s season has been marked by inconsistency, alternating wins and losses over their first seven games. Kiwoom’s struggles continued, having lost five of their last six.
The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday. LG will then travel to face the NC Dinos for a three-game set starting Tuesday. Kiwoom heads on the road for a three-game series against the Doosan Bears, also beginning Tuesday.
