Samsung Lions Rout Doosan Bears in Offensive Onslaught
DAEGU, South Korea (Interstat) — The Samsung Lions erupted for 13 runs on 13 hits Wednesday evening, dismantling the Doosan Bears 13-3 at Daegu Samsung Lions Park to even both teams’ records after a lopsided victory that far exceeded pregame projections.
The game, played on April 1, 2026, saw the Lions’ offense overwhelm Doosan from the outset, erasing an early three-run deficit in the first inning and never looking back. The victory moved both teams to 1-2-1 on the young Korea Baseball Organization season.
The most important sequence of the game came not in the late-inning blowout, but in the bottom of the first. Facing an immediate 3-0 hole after a shaky top of the inning by starter Choi Seung-yong, the Lions’ response was swift and decisive. Leadoff hitter Kim Ji-chan worked a walk, setting the stage for center fielder Kim Seong-yoon. Kim, the game’s top star, laced a triple to right-center field, plating Ji-chan and igniting the home crowd. Koo Ja-wook followed with a sacrifice fly, and before the inning was over, RBI hits from Kim Young-woong and Ryu Ji-hyuk had completed the turnaround. The five-run first inning not only seized momentum permanently for Samsung but also chased Choi Seung-yong, the losing pitcher who fell to 0-1, from the game after recording just one out.
Kim Seong-yoon was the catalyst throughout, finishing a dominant 4 for 5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. His triple in the first started the rally, a two-run double in the fourth extended the lead, another double in the sixth set the table, and an infield single in the seventh drove in the Lions’ final run. This breakout performance followed a solid 2-for-4, one-RBI outing in Tuesday’s tie against these same Bears.
Samsung starter Yang Chang-seop, credited with the win to move to 1-0, provided crucial stability after the offensive explosion. He worked five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out three. His effort allowed the Lions’ bullpen to rest after Tuesday’s 11-inning marathon tie between the clubs. Relievers Lee Seung-hyun, Baek Jung-hyun, and Bae Chan-seung each contributed a perfect inning of work to seal the win.
The Lions broke the game open in the middle innings. After Doosan scratched across two runs in the top of the fifth to narrow the gap to 8-3, Samsung answered immediately in the bottom of the sixth. Kim Seong-yoon doubled and Koo Ja-wook launched a two-run homer to right field, his first of the season, to push the lead back to seven runs. Koo finished with three RBIs.
Samsung added four more runs in the seventh, capitalizing on a Doosan error. With two outs and a runner on third, second baseman Lee Jae-hyeon reached on a fielding error by Doosan’s An Jae-seok, allowing Ryu Ji-hyuk to score. Kim Ji-chan then cleared the bases with a triple, and Kim Seong-yoon followed with his fourth hit of the night to drive in Ji-chan.
Doosan’s offense, which managed seven hits, was held in check after its brief fifth-inning rally. Pinch-hitter Kim In-tae provided the final run for the Bears with a solo home run in the ninth inning. Doosan relievers Choi Won-joon and Park Chi-guk each threw a scoreless inning in the loss.
The final score of 13-3 defied the pregame expectations set by Interstat’s game simulator, which had projected a narrow 5-4 Samsung victory. The Lions, installed as favorites with a spread of +1.5, easily covered, while the combined 16 runs sailed over the posted over/under line of 11.5.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series Thursday in Daegu. The Bears will then return to Seoul to begin a three-game set with the Hanwha Eagles on Friday. The Lions will hit the road for a three-game series against the KT Wiz in Suwon, also beginning Friday.
