Stockton vs. South Bay

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a pivotal late-season clash with playoff seeding implications, the Stockton Kings edged the South Bay Lakers 101-97 in a G League game Sunday at the UCLA Health Training Center.

The victory improved Stockton’s record to 35-17, pulling them a half-game ahead of the Lakers, who fell to 35-18, in the Western Conference standings. The game was a tense, back-and-forth affair that featured 18 lead changes and was not decided until the final seconds.

The most critical sequence came with just over 20 seconds remaining and Stockton clinging to a 99-97 lead. South Bay’s Malik Williams committed a costly turnover, losing the ball to Stockton’s Jon Elmore. After a missed three-pointer by Patrick Baldwin, Kings center Gabe Levin secured the offensive rebound and scored on a tip-in dunk to extend the lead to four points with 0.9 seconds left, effectively sealing the game.

Levin was instrumental throughout, recording a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds while adding three blocked shots in 32 minutes. His activity on the glass, including five offensive rebounds, provided crucial second-chance opportunities.

The contest was characterized by offensive runs. South Bay, led by a game-high 28 points from R.J. Davis, built an early lead, ending the first quarter ahead 28-27. Stockton responded with a strong second quarter, outscoring the Lakers 28-28 to enter halftime tied at 55.

The third quarter proved decisive as Stockton’s defense tightened, holding South Bay to 22 points while managing 19 of their own to take a narrow 74-73 lead into the final period. The Kings then opened the fourth quarter with key baskets to create a small cushion they would never fully relinquish.

DaQuan Jeffries led the Kings in scoring with 27 points and added five assists. Dexter Dennis contributed 19 points, all of which came from beyond the arc, hitting five three-pointers. For South Bay, Drew Timme scored 18 points, Chris Manon posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Arthur Kaluma added 16 points.

The game was a departure from the teams’ last meeting on March 24, which Stockton also won by a single point, 115-114. It also avenged a 115-100 Lakers victory on Feb. 28. The Kings have now won three straight games and seven of their last ten.

Both teams return to action later this week as the G League regular season approaches its conclusion.
