Rip City vs. Austin

(Interstat) — In a tightly contested G League matchup that saw multiple lead changes and a frantic finish, the Rip City Remix edged the Austin Spurs 106-101 on Friday night at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. The victory avenged a loss to the same Spurs team just two days prior and improved the Remix to 27-23, while the Spurs fell to 34-15.

The most important part of the game was the final minute, a sequence defined by critical defensive stops and clutch free throws that allowed Rip City to withstand a furious Austin comeback. The Spurs, trailing by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, had whittled the deficit to just two points in the final 30 seconds, fueled by a barrage of three-pointers from Emanuel Miller and Stanley Umude.

With the score at 102-101 and 11 seconds remaining, Rip City’s Chris Youngblood was fouled and sent to the line. He calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to three. On the ensuing possession, Austin’s Kyle Mangas missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with four seconds left. Youngblood secured the defensive rebound, was fouled immediately, and iced the game with two more free throws to seal the five-point victory.

The game’s narrative was one of runs. Rip City established an early advantage, leading 28-26 after a first quarter that featured seven lead changes. They extended that lead by holding Austin to just 16 points in the second quarter, taking a 48-42 advantage into halftime. The Remix then opened the third quarter with a 14-5 spurt, capped by a Chris Youngblood three-pointer, to build their largest lead at 62-47.

Austin refused to capitulate, chipping away throughout the second half. The Spurs’ fourth-quarter push was led by Mangas and Adam Flagler, who combined for several driving baskets to put pressure on the Remix defense. A 32-point fourth quarter for Austin set the stage for the dramatic final possessions, but Rip City’s composure at the foul line proved decisive.

Youngblood, the Remix point guard from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was instrumental in the win, particularly in the closing moments. His backcourt mate, Javonte Cooke, provided key perimeter play, while center Yang Hansen anchored the interior with timely rebounds and baskets. For Austin, Mangas led the offensive charge, with Harrison Ingram facilitating effectively and Miller providing a late scoring burst.

The win was a significant one for Rip City, not only for snapping a brief two-game skid against Austin but also for demonstrating resilience in a close game on the road against the league’s top team by record. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Austin had entered the game with an 83.10 percent probability to win. The Remix, however, controlled the tempo for long stretches and executed when necessary to secure the victory, handing the Spurs just their second loss in their last ten games.

Both teams return to action quickly, with Austin scheduled to host Mexico City on Saturday. The Remix will continue their road trip looking to build on this momentum.
