College Park vs. Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League shootout at Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse on Friday night, the Greensboro Swarm outlasted the College Park Skyhawks 132-121 behind a balanced offensive attack and a crucial second-quarter surge.
The game, a rematch of a December series swept by Greensboro, lived up to its billing as an offensive showcase from the opening tip. Both teams traded baskets at a blistering pace in the first quarter, ending the period knotted at 30. College Park’s Asa Newell was active early, scoring multiple times at the rim, while Greensboro’s Marcus Garrett and Tosan Evbuomwan provided consistent answers.
The turning point came in the second quarter. With the score tight, Greensboro unleashed a 37-point period, capitalizing on a series of College Park turnovers and missed opportunities. The Swarm’s ball movement and transition game created open looks, with Caleb Grill hitting a pair of three-pointers during the stretch. Terrell Brown, coming off the bench, was instrumental, dishing out assists and applying defensive pressure that led to easy buckets. Despite a 32-point quarter from the Skyhawks, highlighted by Basheer Jihad’s outside shooting, Greensboro built a 67-62 halftime lead it would not relinquish.
College Park mounted a significant challenge in the third quarter, exploding for 39 points. Jihad, the center from Farmington, Michigan, caught fire from beyond the arc, connecting on several deep three-pointers. RayJ Dennis orchestrated the offense effectively, finding Jihad and Newell for scores as the Skyhawks repeatedly cut into the deficit. However, each time College Park drew close, Greensboro had a response. Antonio Reeves and Jonas Aidoo provided timely baskets, and the Swarm matched the Skyhawks’ intensity with 32 points of their own to maintain a 99-101 edge heading into the final period.
The Swarm sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with disciplined execution down the stretch. With College Park forced to extend its defense, Greensboro attacked the interior. P.J. Hall and Marcus Garrett scored key baskets in the paint, and Evbuomwan hit a critical three-pointer with just over a minute remaining to push the lead back to double digits. The Swarm also excelled at the free-throw line in the closing minutes, with Garrett, Evbuomwan and Hall converting crucial attempts to ice the game.
The most important sequence of the contest occurred late in the fourth quarter with College Park still within striking distance. After a Jihad three-pointer brought the Skyhawks to within nine points with under four minutes to play, the Swarm defense stiffened. On the ensuing possession, P.J. Hall stripped RayJ Dennis, leading to a transition three-pointer by Antonio Reeves that extended the lead back to 12 with 2:59 remaining. This two-possession swing, from a potential one-score game to a commanding double-digit margin, effectively ended College Park’s comeback hopes.
The victory improved Greensboro’s record to 34 wins and 15 losses, solidifying its position as one of the league’s top teams. The Skyhawks, despite the offensive outburst from Jihad and a strong performance from Newell, fell to 17-31. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at the same venue on Saturday night.
