Rip City vs. Austin
LEANDER, Texas (Interstat) -- The Austin Spurs used a balanced scoring attack and a dominant fourth-quarter defensive stand to hold off the Rip City Remix 99-93 in a G League contest Wednesday night at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
The game turned decisively in the final period. After Rip City’s Yang Hansen opened the fourth with a layup to cut the Austin lead to 82-81, the Spurs embarked on a 13-2 run over the next four and a half minutes to seize control. The surge was fueled by Adam Flagler, who hit a layup and a critical three-pointer, and Emanuel Miller, who connected on a pair of mid-range jumpers. The Remix offense, which had been potent through three quarters, went ice cold, managing just two points during that span on a Chris Youngblood pull-up jumper.
Rip City, the visiting team, mounted a late challenge, closing to within 97-93 after a Javonte Cooke free throw with 1:44 remaining. But the Remix could not complete the comeback, missing their final five field goal attempts. Austin’s Kyle Mangas sealed the victory by making four clutch free throws in the final 15 seconds.
The Spurs improved their season record to 34 wins and 14 losses, while the Remix fell to 26-23.
Austin built an early advantage, leading 24-17 after the first quarter behind strong interior play from James Banks. Rip City responded with a explosive second quarter, outscoring Austin 32-26 behind the playmaking of Javonte Cooke and the inside-outside game of Hansen to narrow the gap to 50-49 at halftime.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with eight lead changes. The Remix took their largest lead of the game at 73-68 after a Jayson Kent three-pointer with 5:59 left in the period, but the Spurs closed the quarter on an 11-4 run, capped by a Harrison Ingram layup and free throw, to take a 79-77 edge into the final frame.
Austin’s defense was the story of the fourth, holding Rip City to just 12 points on 5-of-21 shooting from the floor and 0-for-8 from three-point range. The Spurs also forced five Remix turnovers in the period.
Mangas led Austin with a versatile performance, contributing key baskets during the Spurs’ decisive run and hitting the game-clinching free throws. Ingram provided a strong all-around effort, and Miller’s timely scoring and defense were pivotal. For Rip City, Hansen was a consistent force in the paint, while Cooke orchestrated the offense for much of the night.
The two teams will meet again at the same venue on Friday.
