Delaware vs. Long Island
(Interstat) — In a high-octane G League showdown that came down to the final second, the Delaware Blue Coats edged the Long Island Nets 120-118 on Wednesday night at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Delaware and avenged a 16-point loss to Long Island just over a month prior.
The game was a classic offensive duel from the opening tip. Delaware established an early rhythm, pouring in 35 points in the first quarter behind a blistering shooting display from Tyrese Martin. The Blue Coats extended their lead to 67-61 by halftime, but the Nets, fueled by a balanced attack and relentless drives, never allowed the margin to become comfortable.
The third quarter saw Long Island chip away, outscoring Delaware 30-22 to take a narrow 91-89 lead into the final period. The intensity ratcheted up in the fourth, with the lead changing hands multiple times in a frantic back-and-forth sequence. With just over a minute remaining and Delaware clinging to a two-point lead, Teddy Allen hit a critical 26-foot step-back three-pointer to put the Blue Coats up 118-113.
Long Island, however, demonstrated its resilience. Hunter Cattoor answered with a driving layup, and after an Allen turnover, Cattoor struck again with another layup to cut the deficit to 118-117 with only three seconds left on the clock. On the ensuing inbounds play, Aminu Mohammed was fouled and sent to the line, where he calmly sank both free throws to extend Delaware’s lead to 120-117.
The most dramatic and pivotal moment of the contest unfolded in the final second. Following a Long Island timeout, Alex Schumacher inbounded the ball to Hunter Cattoor, who launched a deep 28-foot three-pointer as time expired. The shot swished through the net, sending a jolt through the Coliseum. However, after official review, the shot was ruled to have been released a fraction of a second after the game clock reached zero. The basket was waved off, securing the narrow two-point victory for Delaware.
The win improved Delaware’s season record to 20 wins and 27 losses, while Long Island fell to 25 wins and 23 losses. The outcome defied the pre-game statistical projections, which heavily favored the Nets to win on their home court.
Key performances for Delaware included a dominant scoring night from Tyrese Martin, who repeatedly hit crucial shots to stem Long Island rallies. Malcolm Hill provided steady offense and defensive energy, while Saint Thomas facilitated the offense with timely assists. For Long Island, Hunter Cattoor’s late-game heroics nearly forced overtime, and Alex Schumacher orchestrated the offense effectively throughout the contest.
The Blue Coats will look to build on this momentum with a two-game home set against Capital City this weekend. Long Island, meanwhile, will aim to regroup quickly before hitting the road for a game at Cleveland on Saturday.
