Mexico City vs. Valley

(Interstat) — A decisive third-quarter surge propelled the Mexico City Capitanes to a 112-99 victory over the Valley Suns in a G League contest Tuesday night at Mullett Arena.

The game, which saw the visiting Capitanes improve to 28-18 and the Suns fall to 13-36, was ultimately defined by a dominant stretch after halftime. Leading by just a single point at the break, Mexico City erupted for 36 points in the third quarter, effectively putting the game out of reach.

The pivotal period began with the Capitanes tightening their defense and converting turnovers into easy offense. Mexico City opened the second half on a 9-0 run, fueled by a James Bouknight 3-pointer and consecutive baskets from Reynan dos Santos. The run extended to 15-4, forcing an early Valley timeout just over two minutes into the quarter.

Valley, led by Jaden Shackelford’s 26 points, attempted to respond, but Mexico City’s offensive execution was relentless. The Capitanes shot a blistering percentage from the field in the quarter, with point guard Wade Taylor serving as the primary catalyst. Taylor, the game’s standout performer, scored 11 of his game-high 27 points in the third, including a pair of deep 3-pointers that stifled any momentum the Suns tried to generate.

Mexico City’s lead ballooned to as many as 20 points during the quarter, turning what had been a competitive first half into a comfortable advantage. The Capitanes’ ball movement was sharp, resulting in high-percentage looks, while their defense harassed Valley into difficult shots and turnovers.

The first half featured back-and-forth action, with Valley holding a narrow 27-24 lead after one quarter behind early shooting from Marcus Burk, who finished with 21 points. Mexico City clawed back in the second, taking a 47-46 lead into halftime thanks to balanced scoring and a strong effort on the glass from power forward Andersson Garcia, who grabbed 12 rebounds.

Beyond Taylor’s scoring outburst, Mexico City received significant contributions from L.J. Figueroa with 16 points and Ahmad Caver, who added 12 points and six assists. For Valley, C.J. Huntley provided an interior presence with 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while point guard Zhuric Phelps dished out eight assists.

The victory continued a positive trend for Mexico City, which has now won four of its last five games. Valley, conversely, dropped its third consecutive contest. The teams are scheduled for a quick rematch Wednesday night at the same venue.

According to pregame projections, Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a Mexico City victory by 22 points, with an Elo rating system giving the Capitanes a 71.6% probability to win. The actual 13-point margin of victory fell short of the simulation but confirmed the expected outcome based on the teams’ respective season trajectories.
