Long Island vs. Capital City

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive runs and a relentless comeback, the Capital City Go-Go outlasted the Long Island Nets 127-120 in overtime Sunday in a G League contest at CareFirst Arena.

The most critical phase of the game arrived late in the fourth quarter, where the Nets, who had trailed by as many as 21 points in the first half, completed a dramatic rally to force the extra period. Capital City had dominated the opening quarters, racing to a 43-point first quarter and leading 79-64 at halftime behind a torrent of transition baskets and perimeter shooting.

Long Island methodically chipped away throughout the second half, tightening its defense to hold the Go-Go to just 19 points in the third quarter. The Nets’ persistence paid off in the final minute of regulation. Trailing by three, Long Island’s Terry Roberts sank two clutch free throws with 40 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one. After a Capital City turnover, Javon Freeman-Liberty was fouled and calmly made both free throws with 15 seconds left, giving Long Island its first lead since the game’s opening minutes at 120-119.

Capital City’s final possession of regulation ended in a shot clock violation, but the Nets’ Hunter Cattoor missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime tied at 120.

The overtime period belonged entirely to the Go-Go, who shut out the Nets 7-0. Capital City’s defense stiffened, forcing Long Island into missed shots and turnovers on every possession. The Go-Go sealed the victory with a key sequence early in the extra frame: Kadary Richmond hit a short jumper and then, after a Long Island miss, Nolan Hickman drilled a decisive 26-foot three-pointer off an assist from Skal Labissiere to put Capital City up by six, a margin the Nets could not overcome.

The victory improved Capital City’s record to 25-23, while Long Island fell to 25-21. The game was a showcase of resilience for both teams, with Long Island erasing a massive deficit and Capital City regrouping after surrendering the late lead to dominate the overtime.

The teams had split their previous meeting this season, with Long Island winning 104-101 in Washington on Jan. 14. Capital City’s win on Sunday provided a measure of revenge and marked its third victory in the last four games. Long Island has now lost three straight following a five-game winning streak in late February and early March.

Capital City next plays at Delaware on Friday, March 27. Long Island returns home to face Westchester on Tuesday, March 24.
