Mexico City vs. Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Interstat) — In a swift and decisive reversal of fortune, the Mexico City Capitanes avenged a lopsided loss from the night before by defeating the Sioux Falls Skyforce 116-105 in a G League contest Saturday at Sanford Pentagon.

Just 24 hours after suffering a 42-point defeat on the same floor, the Capitanes used a dominant third-quarter surge to seize control and even the two-game series. The victory improved Mexico City’s record to 27-18, while Sioux Falls fell to 26-22.

The game’s pivotal shift came immediately after halftime. Despite a high-scoring first half that saw Sioux Falls hold a 63-57 lead, the Skyforce offense went cold in the third quarter. The Capitanes capitalized with a 27-point period while holding the home team to just 18 points, turning a six-point deficit into a six-point lead entering the final frame.

Mexico City’s defensive intensity in that quarter, marked by multiple blocks and deflections that disrupted the Skyforce rhythm, proved to be the foundation of the win. The Capitanes then maintained their advantage throughout the fourth quarter, matching Sioux Falls bucket for bucket and sealing the game at the free-throw line in the final minute.

James Bouknight led the offensive charge for Mexico City, showcasing a versatile scoring attack. His backcourt play was instrumental in both building the lead and responding to any Sioux Falls attempts at a rally. Andersson Garcia provided a critical interior presence for the Capitanes, impacting the game on both ends with key rebounds, steals and timely baskets.

For Sioux Falls, Vladislav Goldin anchored the paint with a strong two-way performance, but the team’s outside shooting faltered after the first half. Josh Christopher carried a significant scoring load for the Skyforce, but the team’s collective efficiency dropped sharply after halftime.

The Capitanes’ ability to bounce back from Friday’s 131-89 defeat demonstrated a sharp adjustment in focus and execution. The win also snapped a two-game losing streak for Mexico City, which had lost its previous contest in Memphis on March 15 following an overtime win in Grand Rapids.

Sioux Falls, which had won four of its last five coming into the game, including the rout of Mexico City, saw a two-game win streak end. The Skyforce had previously split a two-game set with Stockton and earned a narrow home victory over Austin earlier in the week.

Interstat’s ELO system had projected Sioux Falls with a 68 percent probability to win, making the Capitanes’ responsive victory an upset based on recent form.

Mexico City continues its road trip with a pair of games against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on March 24 and 25. Sioux Falls heads west for two games against the South Bay Lakers, beginning March 26.
