Motor City vs. Wisconsin
OSHKOSH, Wis. (Interstat) — The Motor City Cruise withstood a late surge and a dominant performance from Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis to edge the Herd 113-108 in a G League matchup Saturday night at Oshkosh Arena.
The victory completed a two-game road sweep for the Cruise, who also defeated Wisconsin on Friday night. Motor City improved to 25-21 across all competitions, while the Herd fell to 13-34.
The game’s pivotal sequence came in the final minute with the Cruise clinging to a five-point lead. After Davis cut the deficit to three with a driving score, the Herd forced a shot clock violation to regain possession with 37 seconds remaining. Davis then missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer, and Motor City’s Isaac Jones secured the critical defensive rebound.
Jones was fouled and made both free throws to extend the lead to five with 29 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Davis lost the ball to Motor City’s Bobi Klintman, who was fouled and made a free throw to effectively seal the game. The Cruise made six straight free throws in the final 29 seconds to close out the win.
Davis, the Herd’s 6-foot-5 small forward, was the engine for Wisconsin throughout, relentlessly attacking the basket and hitting key outside shots to keep his team within striking distance. His effort nearly brought the Herd back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter.
Motor City built its lead with consistent offensive production across all four quarters, scoring 28, 30, 28 and 27 points, respectively. Wisconsin, by contrast, started slowly with 25 and 24 points in the first two quarters before finding a rhythm after halftime.
The Cruise’s interior presence, led by Jones, a 6-foot-9 center, provided a crucial counterbalance to Davis’s perimeter prowess. Jones anchored the defense with several key blocks and rebounds while contributing efficient scoring inside. His play was complemented by Klintman, a 6-foot-9 power forward, who hit timely outside shots and made defensive plays.
Wisconsin’s best chance to overtake Motor City came midway through the fourth quarter. A layup by Kobe Stewart, followed by a free throw, capped a quick three-point play that pulled the Herd within two points with just over four minutes remaining. However, the Cruise responded immediately with a 3-pointer from Quincy Olivari to push the lead back to five, a cushion they maintained through the tense final minutes.
Olivari, Motor City’s 6-foot-3 point guard, was instrumental in the backcourt, particularly in the closing moments where his steady free-throw shooting denied the Herd’s comeback attempt.
The game featured 13 lead changes and eight ties, with neither team leading by more than 12 points. Motor City’s ability to answer every Wisconsin run, especially in the final quarter, proved decisive.
The Herd’s next game is Monday at home against College Park. The Cruise return home to face Greensboro on Wednesday.
