Grand Rapids vs. South Bay

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — The South Bay Lakers, one of the NBA G League’s top teams, look to continue their strong season when they host the struggling Grand Rapids Gold on Saturday at the UCLA Health Training Center.

South Bay (29-16) enters with the second-best record in the Western Conference and has won eight of its last 10 games. The Lakers are coming off a 133-126 overtime road loss to Rip City on Tuesday, despite 29 points and five assists from guard R.J. Davis. Davis has been a key catalyst, averaging 24.3 points and 4.3 assists over his last three contests.

Grand Rapids (20-27) seeks to halt a three-game skid and salvage the second half of a back-to-back Southern California set. The teams met Friday night. The Gold are coming off a heartbreaking 130-127 overtime home loss to Oklahoma City on Tuesday, their fifth defeat in six games.

A bright spot for Grand Rapids has been the consistent play of forward DaRon Holmes II. Over his last five games, Holmes is averaging 23.0 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists, including a 36-point outing against Maine on March 13. His matchup with South Bay’s interior, led by center Malik Williams who posted 24 points and six rebounds Tuesday, will be pivotal.

The Lakers have dominated recent play, boasting a potent offense that has scored 125 or more points in five of their last six games. The Gold have shown offensive firepower but struggle defensively, allowing 120.2 points per game during their 1-5 stretch.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, South Bay is projected as a heavy favorite with a 94.80% probability to win.

The game tips off at 7 p.m. PDT Saturday. South Bay next hosts Stockton on Tuesday. Grand Rapids continues a four-game road trip before hosting Birmingham next Friday.
