Salt Lake City vs. Stockton
STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League clash defined by momentum swings and a frantic finish, the Stockton Kings outlasted the Salt Lake City Stars 121-116 on Saturday night at Stockton Arena.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the final 90 seconds, transforming a one-possession contest into a secure Stockton victory. With the Kings leading 115-114, Salt Lake City’s Matthew Murrell committed a costly bad pass, stolen by Stockton’s Jon Elmore. The turnover led to a Patrick Baldwin Jr. jumper off an Elmore assist, pushing the lead to three points with 1:13 remaining.
After a Salt Lake City timeout, Stockton’s defense tightened. Jaylin Williams drew a foul on the ensuing inbound play, and the Stars’ Dereon Seabron connected on a deep 3-pointer to tie the game at 117-117 with 1:02 left. The Kings immediately responded, with Williams finishing a dunk from yet another Elmore assist to reclaim the lead.
Seabron then missed a driving layup on the other end, and Williams secured the defensive board. Baldwin sealed the outcome with a powerful running dunk, again assisted by Elmore, giving Stockton a 121-117 advantage with just 29 seconds left. Two late free throws by Salt Lake City’s Matthew Cleveland provided the final margin.
The victory improved Stockton’s record to 29-16, while Salt Lake City fell to 26-23. The game lived up to its recent history, as the teams had played an overtime thriller won by Stockton in January.
Stockton established early control with a 35-point first quarter, fueled by DaQuan Jeffries and Isaiah Stevens. The Kings led 65-52 at halftime. Salt Lake City mounted a fierce comeback in the third quarter, erupting for 34 points behind a barrage of 3-pointers from Seabron and Max Abmas to take an 86-84 lead into the final period.
The fourth quarter featured eight lead changes and five ties. Stockton’s balance proved decisive, with six players scoring in double figures, led by Jeffries’ consistent perimeter shooting and playmaking. The Kings’ ball movement was exemplary down the stretch, with Elmore orchestrating the offense and tallying multiple assists in the final minutes.
Salt Lake City was led by Seabron’s dynamic scoring, particularly in the second half, and Cleveland’s efficient interior play. The Stars’ comeback effort ultimately fell short due to the late turnovers and Stockton’s clutch execution.
The Kings’ win defied a sloppy start that included several early turnovers, showcasing their resilience in a playoff-intensity atmosphere. Both teams return to action Sunday, with Stockton hosting Santa Cruz and Salt Lake City preparing to host Raptors 905 on Monday.
