Grand Rapids vs. South Bay
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — The South Bay Lakers used a balanced offensive attack and a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the Grand Rapids Gold for a 111-98 victory in a G League matchup Friday night at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The Lakers, improving to 30-16 across all competitions, never trailed after the opening minutes but broke the game open with a 30-point second quarter, turning a narrow three-point lead after one period into a 58-56 halftime advantage. The Gold, who fell to 20-28, could not mount a sustained comeback after intermission, as South Bay maintained a double-digit cushion for much of the second half.
The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred late in the second quarter, when the Lakers unleashed a 14-2 run to transform a tight contest into a commanding lead. With Grand Rapids within 44-42, South Bay’s defense ignited its transition game. A steal by Chris Manon led to a running layup by R.J. Davis. After a Gold miss, Malik Williams secured a defensive rebound, and Davis promptly sank a 25-foot step-back 3-pointer. Another Grand Rapids turnover, this time a bad pass stolen by Manon, resulted in another Davis layup. Following a Gold timeout, the Lakers’ pressure continued as Williams blocked a driving layup, leading to a Tevian Jones dunk off a steal. The burst gave South Bay a 58-44 lead and effectively sealed the outcome, as Grand Rapids never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
South Bay’s offense was efficient and shared, with six players scoring in double figures, led by a versatile performance from Malik Williams. The 6-foot-11 center from Fort Wayne, Indiana, showcased his range, hitting multiple 3-pointers while anchoring the paint. Tevian Jones provided a significant spark off the bench with timely scoring, and Anton Watson facilitated the offense with several key assists. R.J. Davis orchestrated the backcourt, contributing scoring and playmaking.
For Grand Rapids, Dane Goodwin led the early charge, connecting on several first-half 3-pointers to keep the Gold within striking distance. KJ Simpson and Curtis Jones provided scoring bursts, but the team struggled with consistency after halftime, scoring only 16 points in the final quarter. The Gold’s offense often stalled against the Lakers’ defensive activity, which generated steals and disrupted rhythm.
The victory extended South Bay’s strong home record and solidified its position near the top of the Western Conference, while Grand Rapids’ losing skid extended despite a competitive opening period. The two teams are scheduled for a quick rematch at the same venue Saturday night.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, South Bay entered the game with a 94.80 percent probability to win. The Lakers’ performance from the second quarter onward validated that projection, demonstrating the depth and execution that has characterized their successful season.
