Stockton vs. Austin

LEANDER, Texas (Interstat) -- In a frantic finish befitting their recent history, the Stockton Kings survived a monumental fourth-quarter rally by the Austin Spurs to escape with a 106-104 victory in a G League game Sunday at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

The game, a rematch of two previous meetings decided by a total of six points including one in overtime, appeared to be slipping into Stockton’s control after three quarters. The Kings built a 75-64 lead heading into the final period, having held Austin to just 17 points in the third.

But the Spurs, led by the dynamic backcourt play of Kyle Mangas and the all-around effort of Harrison Ingram, erupted for 40 points in the fourth quarter. Mangas scored 15 of his team-high total in the period, including a driving layup with 30 seconds remaining that cut Stockton’s lead to 104-102.

After Stockton’s Patrick Baldwin answered with a layup to push the lead back to four, Mangas drove again and scored while being fouled with 30 seconds left. He missed the ensuing free throw, but Ingram secured the offensive rebound. Following a scramble, Ingram put back his own miss with 16 seconds left, tying the game at 106.

The critical sequence followed on the next possession. Austin’s Elfrid Payton fouled Stockton’s Jon Elmore, sending him to the line for two shots with 15 seconds left. Elmore missed both attempts, and Ingram grabbed the rebound for Austin, giving the Spurs a chance to win on the final possession.

Austin called timeout with 15 seconds remaining to advance the ball. The inbounds play went to Ingram, whose 19-foot pull-up jumper from the left wing missed as time expired, sending the Spurs to a narrow defeat.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the final 30 seconds, a whirlwind that saw Austin complete its comeback only to fall short on the last shot. After trailing by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter, the Spurs’ furious rally, capped by Ingram’s putback, seemed to have secured overtime. But Ingram’s final attempt, a clean look from his preferred spot, rimmed out, allowing Stockton to clinch the road win.

Stockton’s victory was fueled by balanced scoring and steady play through three quarters. Dexter Dennis led the Kings with a strong all-around performance, while Isaiah Stevens orchestrated the offense with timely assists. The Kings improved to 28-15 with the win.

For Austin, Mangas’s late heroics highlighted a gritty performance, and Ingram filled the stat sheet with points, rebounds and key assists during the comeback. The loss dropped the Spurs to 31-13 on the season.

The game continued a trend of close contests between the two teams. Their three meetings this season have now been decided by an average of 3.7 points. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Austin with a 70.5% probability to win entering the contest.

Stockton next travels to face the Valley Vipers on Tuesday. Austin will head on the road to play the College Park Skyhawks the same night.
