Valley vs. Windy City

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (Interstat) — In a high-scoring G League affair defined by offensive runs and crucial responses, the Windy City Bulls outlasted the Valley Suns 125-116 on Saturday night at Sears Centre Arena.

The game, a rematch from just two days prior when the Bulls also emerged victorious, saw Windy City improve to 21-23 on the season while Valley fell to 12-33.

The most important stretch of the contest came late in the third quarter and bled into the fourth, where the Bulls built an insurmountable cushion. After the Suns closed to within single digits, Windy City unleashed a decisive 15-2 run spanning the final minute of the third and the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter. The surge was fueled by Kevin Knox, who hit a pull-up jumper and then opened the final period with a 3-pointer, and was capped by another Knox jumper that pushed the Bulls’ lead to 100-84, forcing a Valley timeout.

Valley, which had shown fight throughout, could not recover from that deficit. The Suns made several pushes in the fourth, including a 10-2 run capped by a Sean McDermott 3-pointer to cut the lead to 109-101 with just over seven minutes remaining. Each time, however, the Bulls had an answer, often in the form of a 3-pointer from Mouhamadou Gueye or a driving score from Mac McClung to stifle the momentum.

The first half was a tightly contested offensive showcase, with Windy City taking a 59-63 lead into halftime. The Bulls opened the game with energy, highlighted by an alley-oop dunk from Gueye, but Valley’s Zhuric Phelps and Jaden Shackelford kept pace. The Suns even held a brief lead in the second quarter after a Nathan Mariano alley-oop and a 3-pointer from Shackelford, but Knox and McClung steadied the Bulls to reclaim the advantage by the break.

Windy City began to create separation in the third quarter, opening with a 9-0 run that featured transition scores from Ryan Woolridge and McClung, plus a steal and 3-pointer from Knox, prompting an early Valley timeout just 62 seconds into the half. The Suns’ offense, which had been efficient, went cold, and the Bulls consistently found Gueye for inside scores and kick-out 3-pointers to maintain a steady lead between 8 and 12 points for much of the quarter before their game-breaking run.

Mac McClung orchestrated the Bulls’ attack, facilitating for others and scoring key baskets to finish as a central figure. Kevin Knox provided consistent scoring, particularly from the perimeter, while Mouhamadou Gueye stretched the floor and protected the rim. For Valley, Zhuric Phelps was a persistent offensive threat, and Jaden Shackelford connected from deep, but the Suns’ defense had no consistent answer for Windy City’s balanced and timely scoring.

The Bulls shot efficiently from the floor and from 3-point range, while the Suns struggled from beyond the arc and from the free-throw line. Windy City also won the rebounding battle, securing key offensive boards that led to second-chance points down the stretch.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Windy City was projected with a 73% probability to win, a forecast they fulfilled by controlling the game’s pivotal moments and securing their second consecutive win over the Suns in three days.
