Stockton vs. Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Interstat) — In a rematch of a game decided two nights earlier, the Stockton Kings exacted a measure of revenge, edging the Sioux Falls Skyforce 123-121 in overtime in a G League thriller Friday night at Sanford Pentagon.
The victory improved Stockton to 27-15 on the season, while Sioux Falls fell to 25-21. The game was a stark reversal of fortune from Wednesday, when the Skyforce escaped with a 120-118 win over the Kings.
From the opening tip, Stockton established an offensive rhythm that Sioux Falls struggled to match. The Kings erupted for 39 points in the first quarter, building a commanding 23-point lead by the end of the period. The offensive onslaught was fueled by precise ball movement and hot outside shooting, putting the home team on its heels early.
However, the Skyforce demonstrated the resilience that has defined their season, mounting a furious comeback in the second quarter. Sioux Falls outscored Stockton 33-17 in the period, erasing the massive deficit and taking a brief lead before heading into halftime trailing by just seven points. The surge was led by the backcourt duo of Josh Christopher and Jahmir Young, who repeatedly attacked the basket and found open teammates.
The second half settled into a tense back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to secure a decisive advantage. Stockton’s Patrick Baldwin and Jon Elmore provided critical scoring and playmaking, while Sioux Falls continued to lean on the tandem of Christopher and Young, alongside timely contributions from center Dain Dainja.
Regulation ended in dramatic fashion. With the score tied and just seconds remaining, Stockton’s Jon Elmore calmly sank two free throws to put the Kings ahead. Following a timeout, Sioux Falls executed a perfectly designed play, culminating in a 25-foot running jumper by Josh Christopher as time expired, sending the game to overtime tied at 115.
The extra period was a microcosm of the entire contest—tightly contested and defined by key plays. Stockton struck first with a deep 3-pointer from Patrick Baldwin, but Sioux Falls answered immediately inside with Dain Dainja. After a Skyforce timeout, Baldwin connected on another crucial 3-pointer, giving Stockton a lead it would not relinquish. The Kings’ defense stiffened in the final minutes, securing stops when needed to close out the two-point victory.
The most critical sequence of the game occurred in the final minute of overtime. With Stockton clinging to a three-point lead, the Skyforce forced a turnover and had a chance to tie or take the lead. A coach’s challenge confirmed a scoring play for Sioux Falls, cutting the deficit to one. On the ensuing possession, Patrick Baldwin responded with a clutch 26-foot 3-pointer, pushing the lead back to four with under 90 seconds remaining. That shot proved to be the decisive basket, as Sioux Falls could only trade baskets the rest of the way.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Sioux Falls entered the game with a 61.2 percent probability to win, making Stockton’s road victory a notable upset. The Kings continue their road trip Sunday at Austin, while the Skyforce are next in action at home against Mexico City on March 20.
