Iowa vs. South Bay

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a high-octane G League shootout, the South Bay Lakers outlasted the Iowa Wolves 123-116 on Wednesday night at the UCLA Health Training Center, overcoming a prolific second-half scoring burst from the visitors to secure their fifth consecutive victory.

The game turned decisively in the final minutes after Iowa, which trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, had clawed back to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. The Wolves’ comeback was fueled by a 35-point third quarter, erasing a 62-47 halftime deficit to enter the final period down just 96-86.

Iowa’s push continued into the fourth, culminating in a driving layup by Zyon Pullin with 4:28 remaining that cut the South Bay lead to 109-108. The Wolves had multiple opportunities to take the lead on the ensuing possession but committed a turnover. South Bay’s Arthur Kaluma then seized control, scoring eight consecutive points for the Lakers in a critical 90-second span. His run included a 3-pointer, a driving dunk and a three-point play, pushing the lead back to 117-108 with 3:59 left and effectively sealing the outcome.

Kaluma, the power forward from Irving, Texas, was instrumental down the stretch, finishing with a versatile statline. His late-game heroics complemented a balanced South Bay attack that consistently answered Iowa’s rallies.

The Lakers set an assertive tone early, leveraging a 34-point first quarter to build a lead they would never fully relinquish. Their ball movement and perimeter shooting created consistent offense, while Drew Timme provided a steady interior presence and facilitation.

For Iowa, the loss came despite a relentless offensive effort, particularly from Pullin and center Joan Beringer. The Wolves shot efficiently from the field but were hampered by 22 turnovers, which South Bay converted into 31 points. The Lakers also dominated in second-chance points, capitalizing on 17 offensive rebounds.

South Bay improved its record to 27-15 with the win, solidifying its position near the top of the Western Conference. Iowa fell to 24-19 despite the valiant comeback attempt, which saw them outscore the Lakers 69-61 in the second half.

The two teams will meet again at the same venue on Friday night.
