Iowa vs. South Bay
Preview: Iowa Wolves at South Bay Lakers
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal Western Conference G League matchup is set for Wednesday when the surging South Bay Lakers host the Iowa Wolves at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The Lakers (26-15) enter on a five-game winning streak, including a 113-104 road victory at Santa Cruz on Sunday. Forward Adou Thiero has been a key catalyst, averaging 21.5 points and 6.8 rebounds over his last four contests. He scored 25 points with six rebounds in the win over Santa Cruz.
They face a Wolves squad (24-18) looking to rebound from a high-scoring 142-132 home loss to Memphis on Sunday. Despite the defeat, Iowa’s backcourt has been explosive, led by guard Zyon Pullin. Over his last five games, Pullin is averaging 29.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.4 assists. He poured in 36 points in the loss to Memphis.
Center Joan Beringer, who had 20 points and 16 rebounds against Memphis, provides a critical interior presence for Iowa.
South Bay has dominated recent play, winning eight of its last 10 games. The Lakers’ offense has consistently topped 110 points during their current streak. Iowa has been more inconsistent, going 5-5 over its last 10, but boasts a potent offense that has scored 122 or more points in seven of those outings.
This contest begins a crucial home-and-home set between the teams, who will meet again at the same venue Friday night. Wednesday’s game could have significant standings implications as both clubs jockey for playoff position in the conference.
The Lakers will rely on their balanced attack, which against Santa Cruz also featured 15 points and nine assists from guard Nick Smith. Containing Pullin and Iowa’s high-tempo offense will be their primary defensive challenge.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
