Birmingham vs. Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Interstat) — The Birmingham Squadron turned a close game into a decisive victory with a dominant third-quarter surge, cruising past the Grand Rapids Gold 122-95 in a G League matchup Wednesday night at Van Andel Arena.

The game’s pivotal shift came after halftime. Leading by just three points, the Squadron unleashed a 37-point third quarter, their highest-scoring period of the night, while holding the Gold to 25 points. That 12-point swing broke open what had been a competitive contest and gave Birmingham an insurmountable 15-point lead heading into the final period.

Birmingham’s offensive execution was sharp throughout, but it reached another level in the third. The Squadron consistently found high-percentage shots and capitalized on Grand Rapids’ mistakes, building a lead that stretched to 27 points by the final buzzer. The Gold, unable to match Birmingham’s intensity or offensive flow after the break, saw their two-game home stand end with a second consecutive loss.

The Squadron set the tone early, leading 28-25 after a first quarter that featured eight lead changes. Grand Rapids kept pace in the second, matching Birmingham’s 28 points to enter halftime trailing 56-53. The Gold’s hopes were quickly extinguished in the third as Birmingham’s defense tightened and their ball movement created a series of open looks.

Birmingham improved its season record to 17-28 with the road victory, while Grand Rapids fell to 19-25. According to Interstat’s ELO system, the Gold had entered the game with a 58% probability to win.

The Squadron’s balanced attack proved too much for Grand Rapids to handle. Key contributions came across the roster, with the team shooting efficiently from the floor and sharing the ball effectively to build their commanding lead.

Grand Rapids was led by the backcourt duo of K.J. Simpson and Javante McCoy, who provided consistent scoring, but the Gold struggled to find defensive answers after halftime. Birmingham’s ability to maintain offensive pressure and control the tempo in the second half was the defining story of the game.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Grand Rapids on March 27. Birmingham returns home to face Maine for a two-game series starting March 16. The Gold continue their homestand with a game against Oklahoma City on March 15 before embarking on a road trip.
